In the minds of many Americans, one of the Biden administration’s most significant failures is the ongoing migrant crisis and the lack of border security to mitigate unfettered illegal immigration. Naturally, as Republicans have sought to hold somebody accountable for such abject failure at the southern border, the GOP has led initiatives to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Recently, Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) provided Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo with a critical update on the Republican impeachment efforts during an appearance on “Sunday Morning Futures.” After the panel hosted its second impeachment hearing last week, Green stated the committee is actively preparing articles of impeachment against Mayorkas.
“Right now, we are assembling articles of impeachment to present to our committee. We will mark those up in committee very shortly after getting back [the week of January 29]. And then, passing the committee, they will go to the floor for a vote on the floor,” Green said.
However, Green noted that one of the challenges of passing the articles of impeachment through the House would require the utmost participation from Republicans, given the slim majority held over Democrats. “One of our challenges is just the folks that are out for health issues right now, but once those individuals get back, I anticipate a very quick vote on the floor,” he added. According to Green, a House floor vote could occur sometime in February.
Continuing to discuss the impeachment proceedings, Green affirmed that Republicans “have the votes” necessary to impeach Mayorkas. However, he was less optimistic about the Homeland Security secretary ultimately being removed from the position despite what Green describes as refusing to uphold American law.
“I certainly hope so, Maria,” he said. “Look, this guy has subverted the laws passed by Congress, ignoring a co-equal branch of government. It’s very clear the law says ‘shall detain.’ And Mayorkas has done everything not to detain. In fact, he’s created systems that — what he calls lawful parole, but it’s actually totally contradicting the Immigration and Nationality Act that was passed by this Congress.”
The Tennessee Republican continued emphasizing that Mayorkas is refusing to enforce the laws approved by Congress, acting in utmost subversion. Green seemingly suggested the secretary’s conduct violated the very structure of government the U.S. Constitution lays out, explaining this necessitates the Republican-led impeachment efforts.
“If a Cabinet secretary doesn’t believe in those laws, he should run for Congress and come over here and change them. He shouldn’t, just like a king, do whatever he wants,” Green explained. “And that’s basically what Mayorkas has done. And that’s why we’re going after this impeachment. It’s about the Constitution, Maria. It’s about the founding principles of our country, separation of power, an Executive Branch that executes and a Legislative Branch that writes the laws. He doesn’t get to write the laws or pick and choose.”
Meanwhile, illegal immigration has soared under Biden’s presidency, where migrants have crossed the border in record numbers. Subsequently, localities in border states and sanctuary cities throughout the American interior have had their infrastructure and resources strained amid the crisis.
