Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” for an interview and, during it, went ahead and did just what every woke watcher of NBC would want: he used the appearance to attack former President Donald Trump.
That came when “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker and Zelensky discussed Trump’s claim that, if re-elected, he would manage to end the war in all of 24 hours, presumably by demanding the Ukrainians negotiate with Russia and strike a reasonable deal or face getting their weapons pipeline from the West shut down.
Zelensky, attacking Trump and ridiculing his claim, said, “I will need 24 minutes… to explain to President Trump that he can’t manage this war,. He can’t bring peace because of Putin. If — but always there is an “if.” If he’s not trying and if he’s not ready to give our territory to this terrible man, to Putin, if you are not ready to give it, if you are not ready to give our independence, he can’t manage it.”
Trump, for his part, had made the 24-hour remark when speaking with Fox News. Commenting first on the intelligence of European leaders compared to Joe Biden, Trump said, “These are smart people, including Macron of France. I could go through the whole list of people, including Putin.… These people are sharp, tough and generally vicious. They’re vicious, and they’re at the top of their game. We have a man that has no clue what’s happening. It’s the most dangerous time in the history of our country.”
Trump added, “I know Zelensky very well. I felt he was very honourable because when they asked him about the perfect phone call that I made, he said it was indeed, he said it was. He didn’t even know what they were talking about. He could have grandstanded.”
He continued, “I know Zelensky very well, and I know Putin very well, even better. And I had a good relationship, very good with both of them. I would tell Zelensky, no more. You got to make a deal. I would tell Putin, if you don’t make a deal, we are going to give him a lot. We are going to [give Ukraine] more than they ever got if we have to. I will have the deal done in one day. One day.”
In any case, Trump wasn’t all Zelensky talked about during the “Meet the Press” interview. He and Welker also discussed what keeps him up at night and what he is thinking about in relation to the war and worries of a possible Ukrainian defeat.
Zelensky, commenting on that matter, said, “It doesn’t mean that we want to fight all our lives, because the price is high, like I said. Because the war takes the best of us. But we are not ready to give our freedom to this f*cking terrorist, Putin. That’s it. That’s why we are fighting.”
Zelensky also claimed he needs the West’s help for at least another year, saying, “The gap will be minimized in our budget and after that — after next year, if the war will not finish next year … I think we will manage to minimize this gap. And you will not help us [at] such [a] high price, I’m sure.”
Zelensky also suggested that Russia would attack NATO countries, saying, “Don’t send your soldiers. God bless, don’t send your daughters and son to other NATO country. Because if Russia will kill all of us [in Ukraine], they will attack NATO countries and you will send your sons and daughters,. The price will be higher…believe in democracy, believe in Ukraine.”
