A dog in Edmond, Oklahoma was saved from a pair of coyotes on the prowl for an easy meal when its “sister” in the family, a cat, jumped into action and came to its rescue, scaring off the two coyotes. The dog, Oakley, is a Havanese dog, and the cat, Binx, is a stray the owners of both took in when she was just a couple of months old.
According to the Dyer family, which spoke to local news outlet KFOR about the incident and owns the saved dog and fighting cat, said that the two animals might not be particularly similar on the surface, but share a deep familial bond and are willing to take risks for each other.
The coyote incident occurred on the night of November 30, 2023, when Oakley went into the backyard in the dark of night and a coyote soon attacked, obviously in the hope of getting a tasty meal out of the small dog. Then another coyote started to edge in, making the situation look particularly bleak for little Oakley.
But that’s when Binx came upon the scene and leaped into action to defend Oakley from the coyotes, scaring off both and saving Oakley from becoming a tasty treat. “[Binx] jumped down and scared them off, it was the craziest thing ever,” Lane Dyer said, describing the amazing incident.
Continuing, Dyer added, “We were able to go back and actually look to see what happened. It was inspiring to see just our little outdoor cat just jump at two coyotes that were attacking this little dog who she loves and run them off.”
The brief window that Binx’s appearance gave Oakley to escape allowed Oakley to get out of the jaws of danger and flee to the safety of the family’s house, but it didn’t come early enough for Oakley to escape injury entirely. In fact, the little dog still needed emergency care from the vet. “[The coyotes] cut her open and she was gushing blood, you know, from her chest and her side,” Dyer said, describing the small animal’s injuries.
But, though grievously injured, Oakley survived long enough to make it to the vet thanks to Binx, and the veterinarians were able to keep her alive and repair most of the damage, putting a cast on her injured front leg and sowing up her other wounds.
The Dyer family adopted Binx when she was a barely born, stray cat in the neighborhood, as Lane Dyer explained, saying, “She was neighborhood cat just showed up when she was about two months old.” That was a kind and fortuitous decision, as now Oakley is still alive and more or less healthy, getting back to being her old self instead of having been a quick meal for the duo of bloodthirsty coyotes.
