In a terrifying but still heartwarming incident out of Everett, Washington, a 13-year-old teen saved an 11-year-old who became trapped in seaweed under a dock, jumping into the water to save the kid from what would have likely been a horrible death by drowning. The Everett Fire Department praised the young man for his selfless bravery.

Describing the incident in a post on Facebook in which it also announced that the 11-year-old had made it out of the ICU shortly after the incident and was managing to recover reasonably well despite also drowning, the Everett Fire Department described arriving on the scene and finding that a young man had jumped into the water to rescue the drowning child.

Beginning the post, the fire department described how the child started drowning, noting that he didn’t know how to swim and had fallen off the dock into the water. It said, “Today at approximately 2:53 p.m., the Everett Fire Department was dispatched to the park after receiving reports that an 11-year-old child had fallen off the dock into the water. An alert adult, who was with another group of children playing and diving off the dock, noticed that the child had not resurfaced and yelled for help. As passersby responded to the call for help, a family member indicated that the child did not know how to swim.”

Continuing, it explained that the teen had to search under the waves multiple times to finally find the boy and struggle up to the surface with him, saving him from a near-certain drowning, at which point adults were able to get the 11-year old fully out of the water and onto the dock: “A 13-year-old young man swimming in the area noticed the situation and bravely dove into the water to search for the missing child. After several attempts, he successfully located the boy and brought him to the surface, where bystanders were able to lift him onto the dock.”

Once out of the water, under which he had been for somewhere between four and size minutes, bystanders tried performing CPR to bring him back to life, but it took the fire crew arriving and performing CPR to get a pulse back before the boy was transported to the hospital, where he regained consciousness.

Praising the teen for his quick thinking and strong actions in saving the boy, the Fire Department said, “The Everett Fire Department recognizes the courageous actions of the 13-year-old teen for his bravery, which undoubtedly played a vital role in saving the child’s life. The quick actions of bystanders also played a crucial role in saving the child’s life.”

Then, in a later post on Facebook about the incident and the 13-year-old, the Everett Fire Department said, “Additionally, we had the privilege of meeting the young man who rescued the child, Gauge. With his family’s permission, we are pleased to share the photo we took of him and his family. Gauge is a remarkable 13-year-old who heroically rescued the child from the lake. His story, which you may have seen on the news last night, has left a profound impact on everyone who has heard it. When we spoke yesterday, Gauge’s main concern was about the well-being and status of the child. He expressed a wish to meet him and become friends, which we are happy to help make happen. Gauge humbly does not see himself as a hero; he simply acted in a moment of need. As a token of our appreciation, we gave him an EFD t-shirt and a commemorative challenge coin.”

Speaking to local media about the rescue, Mr. Bryant described what it was like saving the 11-year-old, saying, “I knew I had to get him out. I got him out, and his lips were purple and blue.” He added that, as he hunted in the dark water under the dock for the boy, he saw what he thought was a rock, but turned out to be a boy. He said, “I saw him cradled and my heart started beating immediately, and I was like I’ve got to get him out of here.” He then lifted him out of the water onto the dock.
