Speaking at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Thursday, July 18, former Fox News Channel host and current podcaster Tucker Carlson spoke out about former President Donald Trump’s incredible response to the assassination attempt in Butler, PA, saying that Trump declined deciding “to inflame the nation” despite the bullet missing his brain by mere fractions of an inch.
Tucker, who now runs the Tucker Carlson Network (TCN), said, speaking about how Trump focused on others in the wake of the horrific incident, not himself, “I reached out to Trump within hours of it [the assassination attempt] that night. And what he said to me that night — having just been shot in the face — he said not a single word about himself.” He continued, “He said only how amazed he was and how proud he was of the crowd, which didn’t run.”
Tucker then described how he reacted to former President Trump speaking about others rather than himself after the shooting, saying that the crowd was inspired by the courage Trump exhibited, saying, “And I thought two things. The first thing I thought was, ‘Well, of course they didn’t run. His courage gave them heart. A leader’s courage gives courage to his people.’”
Tucker then emphasized how Trump’s concern for others contrasted quite strongly with the media’s claims, for years, that Trump is selfish and only focused on himself. He said, “And the second thing I thought was, ‘This is the selfish guy I’ve been hearing about for nine years? Really, not a word about himself?’ About his people, period.”
He then emphasized how Trump refused to use the incident to inflame America, saying, “And the second thing I noticed, which I don’t think anyone has remarked upon in public…is that he turned down the most obvious opportunity in politics to inflame the nation after being shot — to inflame the nation — which is an opportunity that almost every other politician I’ve ever met, and certainly his opponents, would’ve taken instantly.”
Further speaking about that incredible aspect of Trump’s reaction, Tucker said, “But in the moments, the days, the week after the shooting, he did not say that. He did his best to bring the country together. And I thought, ‘This is the divisive figure? This is the irresponsible person?’ No — this is the most responsible, unifying behavior of a leader I think I’ve ever seen.”

Calling for unity in his speech at the RNC on Thursday night, Trump said, “Together, we will launch a new era of safety, prosperity and freedom for citizens of every race, religion, color and creed,. The discord and division in our society must be healed. As Americans, we are bound together by a single fate and a shared destiny. We rise together. Or we fall apart.”
He also spoke about his resolve in the wake of the attack, saying, “Despite such a heinous attack, we unite this evening more determined than ever. I am more determined than ever and so are you. Our resolve is unbroken, and our purpose is unchanged–to deliver a government that serves the American people better than ever before.”
