Former failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was recently triggered by Tucker Carlson’s release of a teaser for an upcoming interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Clinton raged at the conservative icon, labeling him a “useful idiot.”
Carlson has consistently criticized the mainstream media’s narrative on the war in Ukraine, where he has consistently pursued truthful reporting on the matter. This week, Tucker released a video on X explaining his motivations for traveling to Russia and interviewing Putin. In the essence of trustworthy journalism, Carlson seeks to provide the world with an unbiased, truthful perspective on the devastating war.
“Tucker Carlson is in Moscow right now interviewing Vladimir Putin,” said MSNBC’s Alex Wagner, introducing the topic to Clinton. “The first American – I’ll say – ‘journalist’ to interview Putin since the war in Ukraine began. What does not tell you about Tucker Carlson and right-wing media and also Vladimir Putin?”
“Well, it shows me what I think we’ve all known. He’s what is called a useful idiot. I mean, if you actually read translations of what’s being said on Russian media, they make fun of him. I mean, he’s like a puppy dog. You know, somehow, after having been fired from so many outlets and the United States, he– I would not be surprised if he emerges with a contract with a Russian outlet because he is a useful idiot,” the former Secretary of State responded.
Clinton continued criticizing Carlson, claiming that he perpetuates false narratives on the war in Ukraine, citing that as the reason Putin would agree to an interview. “He says things that are not true. He parrots Vladimir Putin’s pack of lies about Ukraine. So, I don’t see why Putin wouldn’t give him an interview because, through him, he can continue to lie about what his objectives are in Ukraine, and what he expects to see happen,” Clinton added.
Clinton doubled down on her claims that Tucker’s reporting is not factual, continuing to suggest he is spreading propaganda on behalf of Putin. “It’s really quite sad that not just somebody like Tucker Carlson who has, as I said, been fired so many times because he seems unable to correlate his reporting with the truth, but also because it is a sign that there are people in this country right now who are like a fifth column from Vladimir Putin,” she added.

According to Clinton, there is an appetite in the United States for authoritarian leadership that uses force to punish political adversaries. “There is a yearning for leaders who can kill and imprison their opponents, destroy the press, lead a life that is one of impunity and bound by any laws,” she said. “There’s a yearning among certain people in our country for that kind of leadership. And I find that absolutely gobsmacking terrifying.”
Despite Clinton’s opinions, many have praised Tucker Carlson for defying the mainstream media. Popular conservative X account “End Wokeness” said, “A journalist doing journalism. What a refreshing change.” Kim Dotcom similarly wrote, “I’m grateful for the stupidity of Rupert Murdoch, the wisdom of Elon Musk and the courage of Tucker Carlson that resulted in the most important interview of our time. I’m looking forward to watching it.”
