As you may know, the issue of race-based admissions to colleges and universities, known as affirmative action, could come to an end as the Supreme Court is poised to rule on it.
For decades, this policy has been in place and benefited minority students in the admissions process. However, many are arguing it is discriminatory, particularly toward Asian and White students.
Tucker Carlson unapologetically blasted the practice, calling it “indefensible” and “totally immoral”. Watch the clip below.
Affirmative action is wrong. It’s totally immoral and unfair — and now, for the first time in years, Democrats are being forced to defend it in public.https://t.co/KYBNWkRKkg pic.twitter.com/HCNwP5FcmU

Tucker initially criticizes affirmative action as it is incongruent with the meritocratic society we have maintained for a long time in the United States. He illustrates this by saying, “In a meritocracy for example, you would hire heart surgeons because they are good at heart surgery. Not because of how they look or who their parents are.”
Tucker also points out that this is the only way for a society to truly be fair. It entails that anyone has a chance to achieve something, within reason, as there is nothing inhibiting their pursuit on the basis of something like skin color. “For generations this is how American society ran. If you were smart and you worked hard enough, you could compete on pretty much equal footing against anyone else in America,” Tucker said.
The example of hiring heart surgeons based on anything other than aptitude points out an issue with the concept of race-based admissions or hiring. If we totally abandon meritocracy, the downstream effects it will have on society would be devastating.
You want surgeons performing surgery, because they demonstrated the utmost capability. Otherwise, more people could die on the operating table. It would be disconcerting to sit down on an airplane and have the pilot announce they were selected to fly to the plane through a diversity program instead of their capability to fly.
Moreover, Tucker points out that this practice totally contradicts the values that the civil rights movement fought for since affirmative action is essentially judging people by the color of their skin. “Ironically, this was precisely the evil practice that the civil rights movement was designed to abolish,” he stated. The whole point of Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech is that he wanted a society where his kids would not be judged by their skin, but their character.
The segment also shows how Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor is a prime example of the issues with selecting people on the basis of skin color. “Sotomayor openly concedes that she got her job because of affirmative action. She was completely and demonstrably unqualified for the position. Obama chose her because of the way she looked.”
Proving that she is unqualified, Sotomayor mixed up the legal terms “De Facto” and “De Jure” which is “a mistake that no first year law student would ever make”, according to Carlson. No person who sits on the court representing the highest legal authority in the country should be making mistakes like that.
It will be very interesting to see how the majority conservative court rules on this issue.
