One of the best country music moments, at least for conservative country fans who are tired of seeing everything, including their beloved music genre, drift far to the left, was when Jason Aldean released his his “Try That in a Small Town” song and made the left, particularly the woke left like “The View,” go absolutely berserk over it.
A number of country music’s big songwriting names were behind the awesome song that nearly sent Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin over the edge. Those songwriters were Neil Thrasher, Kelley Lovelace, Tully Kennedy, and Kurt Allison. Mr. Thrasher recently performed the song alongside Jason Aldean and spoke about crafting it.
Such is what happened when Mr. Thrasher sat down and spoke with Breitbart News’ Mike Slater on his Breitbart News Daily Sirius XM Patriot 125 show. During their conversation, Mr. Thrasher explained both the song itself and the podcast he created based on it, “Try That in a Small Town,” which had Jason Aldean on as its second guest. He said that he hopes the new podcast, which highlights forgotten small towns, will ba force for “good in the world” and enable the team to “use our gifts and the talent that God gave us to help small towns.”
Commenting on what led to the song’s creation, he explained how Kelley Lovelace, one of the co-writers for the song, was inspired to write it when he saw video footage of random assaults in New York City, including thugs sucker-punching pedestrians. Mr. Thrasher said that Lovelace “saw a couple of clips of those and he just got madder and madder and that title just popped into his head.” He continued, “He called me and he goes, ‘I don’t think we’re playing golf today man.’”
The footage and the general chaos in New York City then led to the title of the song, as they were convinced such horrible incidents wouldn’t happen in law and order-focused small towns. He said, “That title instantly was like, boom — all these images of everything that’s going on in New York City — the flag burnings, the cop hating and all that stuff — those images instantly came to us.”
He also said that they knew nearly from the start that Jason Aldean was the country star who could satisfactorily perform the song, saying, “We stopped about half-way through the first verse and I said dude, no one is going to cut this song. I said there is only one artist on the planet that would ever even take a shot at this — that was Jason Aldean.”
Aldean was apparently all on board with the song and ready to go from the start, Thrasher said, though he added that no one involved predicted that the song would take off and become a public matter in the way that it did. He said, “He was ready to put something out that made a little noise and got a little attention. We just didn’t have any idea it was going to make this much noise.”
Mr. Thrasher also performed the song alongside Jason Aldean for Breitbart News. Watch them here:
