President Trump’s Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, brilliantly demolished CNN’s Dana Bash when he appeared on CNN’s “State of The Union” program on Sunday, July 6, with Bessent obliterating Bash as she tried to use typical leftist talking points to attack the Big, Beautiful Bill that both houses of the legislature just passed and the president signed into law on Independence Day.
As background, the BBB largely cuts taxes and funds border enforcement operations. It also tinkers with a few regulations. However, some leftists, such as CNN’s Dana Bash, claim that it will harm lower-income Americans, much in contrast to the intent of provisions like cutting taxes on overtime pay and tips.
Bash, during the interview, using a biased report from the Yale Budget Lab, claimed that the richest in America will see their incomes rise by perhaps two percentage points thanks to the bill’s passage, while those Americans earning the lowest incomes will see their incomes drop by three percent.
Bessent, responding, fired back and noted that the Yale Budget Lab is the epitome of a biased institution. He said, “Well, Dana, first, let’s have a look at the Yale Budget Lab, because I was looking at their findings, and this week I actually went on their website. They’re all ex-Biden officials, so I think we can discount everything they say.”
Continuing, the Treasury Secretary firmly noted that every provision in this bill is one that will help out America’s middle and working classes, saying, “I’d encourage all your viewers to look at the composition of both the board and the staff. And it’s just not right that what we have here is a middle class and working class bill.”
He added that the same sort of dire threats were made before the first Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, whereas in reality wages grew rapidly. He said, “That we, are going to see wages accelerate and we are going to see, just as we saw with President Trump’s first tax bill, we are making permanent these tax cuts.”
A bit later, Bash claimed that the bill is changing benefits programs. Bessent, shutting that down utterly, told her that those claims were all just made up. He said, “No, there are no change in benefits. There’s a change in requirements to get the benefits. What we are doing is, we are bringing back manufacturing jobs.”

He then noted that people will gett off those welfare programs as they get better jobs thanks to the deportations, saying, “We are bringing back working class jobs. By securing the border, we have already seen working class wages move up. So we are creating jobs, people can get off Medicaid and get a job that has good healthcare benefits, Dana.”
Then, as Bash kept trying to frame putting work requirements on Medicaid use, Bessent nuked that talking point utterly, saying, “Well, no, no, no, but we’ve also wanted to put in work requirements, which somehow that was very popular under Bill Clinton, was popular under President Obama, and this Democratic Party blew out the deficit in 2020, and they never want to bring it back. But work requirements even poll well with the median Democratic voter, maybe not the fringe.”
