Donald Trump voiced his support for defunding NPR and PBS the day before Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene held a House DOGE subcommittee hearing titled “Anti-American Airwaves. ” The hearing blasted NPR and PBS for their obvious liberal bias and raised questions about the future of federal donations to the two broadcasters.
For context, NPR and PBS receive funding through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which allocates hundreds of millions annually. However, critics have argued that Radical Democrats control them, and the networks often violate their supposed standards of impartiality.
The funding controversy was shown by President Trump’s remarks to the press, which were clipped and posted to X on March 25, 2025. When asked about the future of PBS and NPR, he said, “We’re well covered. Look at all the people that we have here today. We’re well covered, and we don’t need it. And it’s a waste of money, especially. I don’t even know what DOGE’s recommendation is.”
The president continued his remarks and signaled that he may soon defund these far-left rags. He added, “I assume their recommendation is to close them up. Well, after they hear all the testimony, I think they’re going to make a decision relatively sooner than later. But we’ll see what that turns out. I can’t imagine that they wouldn’t because they have found so much waste, fraud, and abuse.”
Below the clip of Trump’s epic NPR takedown, social media users indicated their support for the president. One user remembered their own experience with PBS. They wrote, “I tried to watch a “Gilded Age” special that came up on Youtube the other day. Turned out to be a communist propaganda lecture. Gave up at the segment about how their candidate almost beat the republicans and democrats in an election, then noticed it was produced by PBS.”
One comment argued that these programs are out of date and no longer useful. A reply read, “@DOGE we don’t need @NPR or @PBS anymore. They used to have a purpose but with 97.1% of America have access to the internet and news online and free from many places. We would be better off with a better Whitehouse.gov with new content with real information directly from our government @WhiteHouse @POTUS @VP @elonmusk”

Some of the replies confirmed Trump’s assertions about NPR’s left-wing bias. A comment read, “If they can’t serve the US government regardless of politics, they shouldn’t be funded by the US government – If they work for the Democratic Party, the Democrats should fund them out of pocket!”
Another agreed, saying, “I’ve been listening for the past few weeks. In all that time I’ve heard one (1) single moderately right leaning guest. Hosts are 100% leftwing. And when they do bother to mention the right’s perspective it is either with invective or mockery.”
