During President-elect Donald Trump’s bombshell Mar-a-Lago press conference Tuesday morning, he suggested that Canada is so reliant on the United States’ support that the nation should essentially revoke its sovereignty and become America’s 51st state. Trump explained that when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who recently resigned from office, met with him late last year, he told him exactly that.
Commenting on it during his press conference, Trump questioned, “But why are we supporting a country two hundred billion plus a year?” He added, “Our military is at their disposal all of these other things they should be a state.” Trump explained that he even said this face-to-face with Trudeau. “That’s why I told Trudeau when he came down. I said, ‘What would happen if we didn’t do it?’ He said, ‘Canada would dissolve, Canada. wouldn’t be able to function.”
Late last year, Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy reported on the meeting between Trump and Trudeau, shedding light on the details of the contentious conversation. “And tonight we’re getting some new details about that Trump-Trudeau dinner from two people who were at the table. We are told that when Trudeau told President-elect Trump that new tariffs would kill the Canadian economy, Trump joked to him that if Canada can’t survive without ripping off the US to the tune of $100 billion a year, then maybe Canada should become the 51st state, and Trudeau could become its governor,” he told Brett Baier at the time.
Trump made other significant statements during his press conference, including a proposition to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” Trump informed the reporters present, “We are going to be announcing at a future date, pretty soon we’re going to change … because we do most of the work there, and it’s ours … we’re going to be changing … so the opposite of Biden, where he’s closing everything up, essentially getting rid of fifty to sixty trillion dollars worth of assets.”
Getting to the point, Trump stated, “We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.” Trump quipped that the name change “has a beautiful ring” to it. He continued, “The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.” The comments mirror other remarks in which he has suggested that the U.S. reclaim the Panama Canal.
The President-elect also addressed January 6 pardons, drawing attention to the controversial death of Ashli Babbitt. Ashley Babbitt was killed. She was shot. She had never been shot. She was shot for no reason whatsoever. In fact, they say that she was trying to hold back the crowd, and the crowd is made up of a lot of different people, so we’ll see.”
“But I will tell you this, the person that was was killed was Ashli Babbittt,” Trump emphasized. Furthermore, the incoming president highlighted that there were never insurrection charges in the first place. “But the other thing is, when they talk, you know, there was never charges of insurrection or anything like that. But if there were, this would be the only insurrection in history where people went in as insurrectionists with not one gun.”
