Speaking with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, former President Donald Trump sounded off on the Biden Administration’s electric vehicle policies, which he characterized as being “insane.” That came as part of a larger series of comments from Trump on what another four years of Biden would mean for American manufacturing, particularly United Autoworkers union members.
Speaking on the matter, he argued against electric car policies, saying that those vehicles would be produced in China and not be good for American manufacturing. Continuing, he argued that EVs have many issues that make them less than useful for the average American, which is why people want to keep using gas cars.
He said, “If Biden gets elected, you won’t have an auto worker working in the United States. Everything’s going over to China and other countries outside.” He added, “This electric car mandate is insane. They don’t go far, they cost too much, and they’re going to be made in China because they have the material to make them. We have oil and gas, we have gasoline, and that’s what people want for the most part.”
Trump also spoke to the media after he met with UAW to discuss the election, and he tore into EVs after that meeting as well. Beginning, he spoke about the China and jobs problems, saying that it was a big mistake for the UAW to be on board with Biden’s EV policies. He said, “Well, I think the UAW made a terrible decision by allowing all electric cars, they’re all going to be made in China, you’re gonna have no jobs over here.”
Continuing, the former president spoke about the many problems with EVs, not least of which is the death grip China has over much of the industry, particularly the rare earth minerals needed for them. He said, “But I will not allow all electric cars, I’m gonna have all kinds of cars, because the electric mandate is is a disaster. They don’t go far enough. They cost too much. We don’t have the materials to make them but China does. And you’ve heard me say it 100 times.”
He vowed to end that and make American manufacturing competitive, though he leans in favor of internal combustion engine cars. He said, “I would end that I would. You can buy an electric car. Absolutely. But you’re also going to be able to buy other types of cars and types of types of propulsion. Depending on what you want. You’re going to you’re going to be able to buy what you want to buy.”
He also spoke about another issue with EVs, noting that the batteries can have issues in the bitter cold. He said, “We went, many of you were there, Iowa, where it was 40 degrees below zero on voting night. 40 degrees below zero. And did you notice all those cars pulled over to the side they were all electric cars, they don’t work well in cold weather that was so that was very cold weather.”
Posting about the UAW situation and EVs on Truth Social, Trump said, “I had the great privilege of watching Shawn Fain, the President of the United Auto Workers, this morning on DeFace the Nation. He is a real “STIFF” who is selling the Automobile Industry right into the big, powerful, hands of China. 55% of the industry has already left the U.S., and the rest will soon be following if I am not elected President. He bought into Biden’s “vision” of all Electric Vehicles, which require far fewer workers to make each car but, more importantly, are not wanted in large numbers by the consumer, and will ALL be made in China. I want them to be made in the USA, every type of car, and would require China, and other countries, through TARIFFS, or otherwise, to build plants here, with our workers. Now they are building in Mexico, the biggest plants anywhere, and selling their cars, Tariff Free, into the good ol’ USA. Shawn Fain doesn’t understand this or have a clue. Get rid of this dope & vote for DJT. I will bring the Automobile Industry back to our Country.”
