President Donald Trump put on a master class in performing his signature dance on the South Lawn of the White House on May 5, 2026, providing youngsters with a tutorial on how to boogie-down like the commander-in-chief. The playful moment came just after the president revealed how long he works out on a daily basis.
The event, attended by a small group of children, was focused on the topics of physical fitness and youth athletics. A video of the event, shared by the official White House X account, has already gone viral, showcasing a side of President Trump that many do not get to see, mostly due to skewed coverage from the mainstream media.
The video showed Trump teaching the kids to do what many have affectionately dubbed the “Trump Shuffle,” which he usually busts out at rallies and other celebratory events. President Trump also signed a new proclamation restoring the Presidential Fitness Test award. The kids joined Trump in the Oval Office, along with several professional athletes and administration officials.
According to The Sun, Trump, sporting a grin, said, “I work out so much. Like about one minute a day, max, if I’m lucky.” After cracking the joke, Trump, 79, took on a more serious tone as he discussed the importance of sports and fitness. “These next few years will be a golden age of athletics,” Trump said to the group. The event also featured Trump giving the kids a golf lesson with professional golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Gary Player.
A lighthearted exchange between the president and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy also occurred during the proclamation’s signing. Kennedy told a story about his uncle, former President John F. Kennedy. He said that JFK once told members of his Cabinet that one of them would need to finish a 50-mile hike “to show the American people that we’re in shape.”
“This Cabinet could’ve done it. We have a bunch of thoroughbreds on this Cabinet,” Kennedy went on to say. He then listed several officials he believes could accomplish the task, including Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and Education Secretary Linda McMahon. “There’s a lot of people who could probably do a 50-mile hike,” he concluded.

Trump, noticing his name was left off the list, jumped in and said, “What about me? You didn’t mention my name.” Kennedy then praised the president’s golf routine. “This guy walks nine miles a day on a golf course every weekend, so he could do it in a breeze,” Kennedy stated. “When I’m not using a cart,” Trump said, smiling.
President Trump has described golf as being part of his exercise routine on numerous occasions. In 2020, he posted a defense of his love of playing golf by saying his time on the course was his way of staying active. “I play VERY fast, get a lot of work done on the golf course, and also get a ‘tiny’ bit of exercise. Not bad!” the post read.
Several years before the post, in 2018, Trump said that he got “more exercise than people think.” He stated, “I get exercise. I mean I walk, I this, I that.” He then added, “I run over to a building next door.” Former White House doctor Ronny Jackson once stated that the president was “more enthusiastic about the diet part than the exercise part, but we’re going to do both.”
