In an interview on ABC that was so absurd it was hilarious, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), the senator who was caught funneling millions of taxpayer dollars to his wife through tens of millions of dollars in non-profit funding that ended up in her hands, much of which ended up in her hands, and thus his, through salary payments, claimed that he and Democrats are fighting for “our democracy.”
That interview occurred on Sunday, March 16, and took place on ABC’s “This Week” with ABC host Martha Raddatz. In his comments, the seemingly quite corrupt senator claimed that this Trump Administration term has become more than just a political struggle and is a “fight for our democracy.” Ignored was that the senator has a financial reason to be upset as DOGE tries to crack down on corruption schemes of the sort he appears to have been engaged in.
Broaching the matter, host Martha Raddatz asked Sen. Whitehouse about Sen. Schumer backing down and not forcing a government shutdown over the recently passed spending bill. She said, “Let’s talk about Senator Schumer. He did not want the government shut down because he felt that would not be good for Democrats either. So what is your reaction to what he did and how would Democrats deal with that now?”
Responding, the seemingly quite corrupt senator claimed, hilariously, that Sen. Chuck Schumer is “principled” and “conscientious.” He said, “I think that he and the other nine colleagues of mine who made that decision made a very conscientious and principled decision after a lot of reflection.” That stands in stark contrast to conservatives calling out Sen. Schumer as a “lying crook”.
In any case, Sen. Whitehouse continued, saying he wouldn’t throw those Democrats who voted for the continuing resolution alongside Sen. Schumer under the bus. He said, “I’m not going to throw any of them under the bus for the choice that they made. When you understand how dangerous a shutdown is, it’s even more, sort of, understandable why they would feel that way.”
That’s when the senator got to claiming that Democrats are fighting for “our democracy” in trying to oppose President Trump, and thus it is time for them to close ranks and stop the internal bickering. He said, “And so I think what we need to do is stop the intramural fighting and bleeding as quickly as we can. We are in a fight for our democracy right now, and if we’re having a fight in our dugout, we’re not out on the field, and the other team is scoring runs.”
Concluding, Sen. Whitehouse argued that it is time for Democrats to continue fighting DOGE head Elon Musk and President Trump, saying, “So everybody needs to have their say. Everybody needs to you know respond to their own passions and emotions. But as soon as we can, we got to get back on the field and fight Trump and Musk and MAGA.”

The complaint against Sen. Whitehouse alleged, “Senator Whitehouse’s wife, Sandra Whitehouse, has worked for the advocacy group Ocean Conservancy since 2008. Since then, Ocean Conservancy has been awarded nineteen government grants worth approximately $14.2 million.” It added, ” It is important to note that nearly half of this $14 million was given to the group in the fall of 2024 alone–a $5.2 million grant in September 2024 and a $1.7 million grant in December 2024. Senator Whitehouse directly supported and voted for the legislation that led to these grants.”
