Co-host of ABC’s “The View,” Sunny Hostin, attacked First Lady Melania Trump, speculating on the nature of her marriage with President Donald Trump. The clip surfaced on social media in early October, when Hostin suggested that Melania “hates” Trump and deplores having to be the first lady of the United States. The panel on the daytime talk show has long maintained a critical attitude toward the Trump family.
Hostin began, “I think she hates him.” Co-host Joy Behar concurred, “Well, yeah. That’s a given.” Hostin continued, “Okay, so we can all agree on that. That that’s a given.” As the live audience laughed at the speculative commentary toward Melania, Hostin went on, “I also think that she wants to take him out. She does not want to be the first lady anymore.”
Continuing her tirade against Melania, she added, “She destroyed the rose garden. Who hates Christmas? Melania Trump hates Christmas. She doesn’t want to decorate for Christmas. She doesn’t want anything to do with him. She doesn’t want to sleep in the same room with them. She can’t tolerate him.” Whoopi Goldberg chimed in, “Allegedly,” acknowledging that the claims were not substantiated. Behar agreed, “You don’t know all this.”
In the weeks after Trump decisively defeated former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, “The View” was continually forced to read “legal notes” regarding the claims the co-hosts were making about President Trump and his cabinet picks. The American Tribune previously reported on Hostin reading off three notices in several minutes during a segment last year.
During one instance, Hostin interrupted the program to say, “I have a legal note…Matt Gaetz has long denied all allegations and has not been charged with any crime.” Making another correction, Hostin provided a clarifying statement about Trump’s nominee for Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth. “Also another legal note, Pete Hegseth’s lawyer said he paid the woman in 2023 to head off the threat of a baseless lawsuit. He has denied any wrongdoing,” she stated.
“I have another legal note,” Hostin later announced on the episode. “Both Trump and Pam Bondi have denied allegations of a quid pro quo that his past donation played any role in her office’s decision to not take legal action against Trump University. When she was, of course, the Attorney General of Florida.” This led co-host Ana Navarro to joke, “This show is going to be just legal notes and things we’re selling. Behar similarly said “That’s why I said we’re not calling the legal note.”
In yet another instance in December involving Pete Hegseth, Hostin had to read off legal note about the Defense Secretary nominee reportedly paying off a woman in recent years to avoid a lawsuit. Hostin was forced to concede that no charges were ever brought against him. “Pete Hegseth has denied any wrongdoing. His lawyer said he paid the woman in 2023 to head off the threat of a baseless lawsuit. No charges were ever brought,” she said.
