Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico received a chilly welcome from one attendee at a town hall event he held in the city of Houston on July 19, 2026, after he seemingly ignored certain questions in an attempt to avoid answers that could potentially sink his campaign. The tense exchange was caught on video and has since gone viral on social media.
During the town hall, Talarico took questions for 90 minutes. Video taken by Austin American-Stateman’s Faith Bugenhagen showed a black woman yelling at the Democratic nominee, “So you stay here, you answer our questions or you suffer the consequences.” Other attendees seemingly agreed with the woman, showing their support by giving her a round of applause.
One man could be heard in the background encouraging the woman, saying, “Say it with your whole chest.” Talarico attempted to smooth over the encounter by thanking the woman for traveling to attend the event, but his efforts failed spectacularly. “I did it for my people, not for you,” she said. He told her that was “wonderful” while others in the audience began to murmur about her comment.
“So I’m happy to engage. We’ll come to here in just a second. I appreciate you being here, and I appreciate you traveling in, and I appreciate you. Wonderful, and that’s wonderful. Like that’s wonderful. And it’s all right. It’s all right. It’s all right. This is what this conversation is supposed to be about. Yeah,” he replied to the woman’s pushback.
According to a report from The Hill, attendees gave Talarico a standing ovation when he first took the stage at the Kingdom Builders Center. The Democratic Party nominee then took questions on issues such as voting rights, issues impacting black farmers, and what it means to support black candidates for public office.

Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX) praised Talarico’s performance during the town hall, writing in a post on X, “254 counties in TX and 90 mins is excellent. Like you said, ‘one attendee’….you will never, nor should you ever, make everyone happy. And, you never know who the one person might have been.” Others who commented on the video were supportive of the woman, but not so much with Talarico.
“I have no idea why the idiots in the DNC ran this nancy in Texas, but I’m glad they did,” one user wrote. “His only ability is his ability to stay calm but that’s just a facade. You can train yourself to be that way in public. Nobody should be fooled by this. He’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The devil is a pretender. Don’t fall for this. Don’t give him power,” another commented.
“James is a weak man. He can’t answer questions. He’s a total embarrassment, total disgrace,” John Peters said in a post on X. “Good for the woman that spoke up to that creepy soy boy. Oh I’m sure creepy Talarico will go home and cry to Mommy. TX wake up this soy boy has real issues. Check out his laptop someone,” Tina replied.
