In a classic woke blunder, Sean Gunn, the actor and brother of filmmaker James Gunn, created a massive online backlash at the film’s premiere. The director has already courted controversy by referring to Superman as an “immigrant” in an interview, framing the movie as a pro-immigrant story about kindness; however, his brother has made the situation even worse.
For context, Sean doubled on these woke talking points and alienated even more potential viewers. Defending his brother, he said, “People who say no to immigrants are against the American way,” and painted any criticism as un-American and bigoted.
Such was shown when he defended the director’s view that the movie was about immigration, saying, “It’s exactly what the movie is about. I think that, like, we support our people, you know, we love our immigrants. We love Yes, Superman is an immigrant, and yes, the people that we support in this country are immigrants. And if you don’t like that, then you’re not American people.”
Unsurprisingly, these controversial statements enraged conservatives, leading many to speculate about the film’s financial success. Across the web, social media users criticized Gunn’s political remarks and hoped that the new Superman film would suffer economic consequences for these divisive statements.
Taking to social media on July 8, 2025, an outraged conservative blasted Gunn for his attempts to inject woke politics into his movie. The user said, “dear @JamesGunn and Sean gunn, Superman isn’t an immigrant, he is a refugee, An ACTUAL refugee from krypton. You directed this film, did that not occur to you? Just shut up and make a good film, Americans are sick to death of rich out of touch Hollywood elites lecturing to us ‘little people.'”
Continuing the rebuke, the user compared this pathetic publicity stunt to previous SUperman movies, writing, “Richard Donner didn’t pull this sh*t and shoot his mouth off and try to insult half the country! He wanted everyone to love and enjoy his film, and they did!”
Concluding the epic rebuke, he said, “Most people, myself included, were pumped for your film. I have been a comic book collector since 1978, and Superman my favourite character, so do you not want my money because I am centre right? Grow… up!”

In the comments under this post, other users agreed, such as one commenter who replied, “He doesn’t exactly live among migrants, but they keep the toilets clean in his $8.5 million home in Bel Air. Sometimes he even speaks to them. The guy is practically Mother Theresa.”

Building on this point, one conservative compared this gaffe to other Hollywood blunders. The comment read, “@jamesgunn is a typical Hollywood bubblehead. Read the room. @RachelZeg should have been a lesson for them all. Looks like he’ll have to learn on his own. I’m sure the studio is ready to ring his neck!”
Annoyed by the need to inject left-wing politics into a blockbuster, one woman said, “What’s more, Superman viewed himself as a man from Earth willing to fight tooth and nail to defend it and the people he grew to love. Just make a movie about a tough, confident guy who flies around saving people, and has real sincerity behind it.”
