Dianna Russini, a former reporter with ESPN, attempted to use her vast connections in the world of sports and the media to try and get out of a tough spot with a local law enforcement officer, but, unfortunately for her, things didn’t really go the way she first described them. A report from the New York Times revealed that the incident in question took place in January 2026.

The former NFL insider was pulled over for texting on her phone while operating her vehicle. Russini is no stranger to controversy, as she’s currently the subject of an investigation by her former employer, The Athletic, who is looking into whether her reporting was influenced by her romantic relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.

During a February appearance on a podcast, Russini confessed to the traffic stop incident, admitting that she pulled a “nasty play” by getting the head coach of the police officer’s favorite football team on FaceTime to get out of a ticket. She claimed that the stunt was successful. “So, he names the team [that he is a fan of] and I go, ‘Oh, I love that team. Do you want to talk to the coach?” she told the show’s host.

“You should talk to the coach,” Russini said during the program. According to a report from Breitbart News, that wasn’t actually how things went down. Recently released body cam footage from the officer who pulled her over shows that she certainly attempted to use her status to get out of the ticket, but she did not Facetime with a coach.

“So — you’re not gonna care — I’m an NFL reporter, and I just wrote that Sean McDermott got fired from the Bills,” Russini said to the officer, “and that is what I was just sending. I sent a tweet, and I was gonna pull over because I have to make calls. I know you don’t care, but I’m just letting you know my reason why. It was a work thing, and it was an emergency for what I do.”

This didn’t faze the officer who noted that Russini had been on her phone for quite some time. She then told the officer that she had just been on the phone with then-New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll. When he revealed that he was a fan of the Minnesota Vikings, she then showed him her phone. She had recently texted with Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell.

“Oh my God, KOC!” the officer said. Russini and the officer chit-chatted about the Vikings for a bit before he let her go with a warning, telling her to, “Keep me updated with the Vikings.” Reactions in the comment section were mixed. One individual wrote, “Whatever. If you can talk your way out of a ticket, good for you. I always find that being polite and respectful works best.”

Another commenter joked, “I once tried name dropping my sister, brother, uncle, cousin, first cousin once removed, and finally my wife. He felt sorry for me with the wife part and let me go without a ticket.” Someone else said, “One of life’s most joyfully entertaining events to watch is name dropping that falls on unimpressed ears.”
