A recent Spirit Airlines flight from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Boston experienced some unexpected turbulence, although it wasn’t caused by weather. The trip concluded with two passengers engaging in a violent brawl.
A viral video captured the incident, where two men exchanged punches shortly before the plane landed in Boston. The instigation for the fight is unknown. “Next thing you know they were throwing it down right in front of us,” Nicole Grome, a passenger on the flight from with her parents, told a local news outlet. “We were right there. I could have touched his arm.”
Grome noted that the flight attendant was trying, in an exercise in futility, to quell the altercation. “That poor flight attendant. She was doing her best,” she said. “She’s putting herself in a dangerous situation to protect everyone else on the flight.”
The footage shows the attendant trying to remove other passengers from the scene as the men continued lashing out at each other. “If you’re not part of that fight, please get off the airplane!” she announced to other travelers over the intercom.
Grome’s mother, Laura, explained that the men in question had engaged in a shouting match for most of the flight leading up to the fistfight. “We were on the runway, and it turned physical,” she said. “You just don’t know what’s going to happen and what may or may not be used as a weapon.”
Allen Grome, Nicole’s father, explained that the experience of flying on a commercial airline is certainly not the luxury it once was. “I want to give a shout-out to the flight attendants. They went out of their way to deescalate the situation,” he said. “Flying is certainly not like it used to be!”
Spirit Airlines released a statement indicating that the two men involved in the altercation were placed on the airline’s no-fly list. The airline noted that law enforcement was dispatched to the scene following the incident. Watch footage of the fight below:
“Law enforcement was requested due to a disturbance that occurred as Spirit Airlines flight 3907 was deplaning in Boston on May 7,” a Spirit Airlines spokesperson stated. “We do not tolerate disruptive behavior of any kind, and the passengers involved are no longer welcome on any of our flights.”
Massachusetts State Police Trooper Brandon Doherty said authorities responded to the incident at Logan International Airport and located the two men after they had exited the security checkpoint. Reportedly, the victim of the confrontation did not wish to pursue charges.
“At 11:50 Tuesday night patrols from the SP-Logan Airport responded to gate B37 for an altercation between two passengers,” the state trooper said. “Troopers arriving to that location minutes later, had discovered both involved parties had made their way to the public side of the security checkpoint. Troopers were able to locate the victim of the confrontation curbside. That man reported he was not injured and did not wish to pursue any charges.”
