Wisconsin Democratic socialist gubernatorial candidate and state Rep. Francesca Hong attempted to explain what it actually means to be a socialist by comparing it to National Football League team the Green Bay Packers and, much like her campaign, failed miserably. In fact, Hong soon found herself the butt of a million jokes on social media platform X, which as most know, rarely ever shows mercy.
Hong started off in the now-viral clip by saying that socialism is a system “that puts people first,” going on to add, “where we have our local governments funded. They can fix potholes. They can make sure that we have great schools.” All of the funding for this comes from taxpayers. The problem, as wise economists have pointed out over the years, is that with socialism, you eventually run out of other people’s money.
The Democratic state representative then explained what she and others with her worldview are fighting for, and in reality, it’s just a massive expansion of the welfare state that can only be funded by slapping a massive tax increase on hard working Americans who already have a difficult time making ends meet. “The things that we are fighting for: universal childcare, the fully funding public schools,” Hong said.
She then brought up the Green Bay Packers, saying, “You know, today is the day that the Green Bay Packers were founded, our publicly owned NFL team. I think that Wisconsin has a proud history of progressivism, and the policies that we are fighting for honor that. But more importantly, they honor working class people who should be first in government for voters,” she concluded in the clip.
As stated above, users on X wasted no time in putting Hong through the proverbial wood chipper for the comparison. Right off the bat, a poster wrote, “You do, of course, realize that the Green Bay Packers are owned by ‘old white people?'” Someone else took the time to break down Hong’s statement and point out just how wrong she actually is about the team, noting it is actually an example of capitalism, not socialism.
“The Packers are a corporation, one owned by individual shareholders, the way most large corporations are. While it’s a nonprofit corporation with unusual bylaws, it is not owned by any government — putting it at odds with what socialists want for most prominent businesses,” Patrick McIlheran commented. A big fan of the team had stronger words for Hong, saying, “Keep the Packers good name out of your Commie-pinko mouth.”
“Looks like DSA gave marching orders to talk about football since their hero AES made weird a** remarks about America’s sport,” another person wrote, adding, “I can’t wait until these Socialist freaks go the f**k away. You couldn’t hand the GOP a better gift than these freaks even w/Trump & the GOP’s disastrous current term.”

Another user, Ben Bayer, went on to explain, “‘Publicly owned’ means they sell shares of stock to the public. Nice to hear that progressivism is so fond of Wall Street now.” Conservatives are breathing a sigh of relief that the Democratic Socialists of America candidate lost the primary and will not be moving on to the general election.
