Speaking Sunday, July 28, during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” program with CNN anchor Jake Tapper, Senator Elizabeth Warren giddily suggested that now-Vice President Kamala Harris would, if elected president in November, work with Congress to “create a pathway to citizenship” for illegal immigrants.
That came as the two spoke about Vice President Harris’s responsibilities at the border and how voters view the situation at the border, with Tapper arguing that Americans are far from happy with how things have turned out and that the border situation is one of the Democratic Party’s worst vulnerabilities.
Tapper said, noting that VP Harris was tasked with leading the response to the causes of mass migration at the border, saying, “President Biden charged Vice President Harris with addressing the root causes of mass migration at the border by going to those Central American countries. She’s consistently defended his handling of the border crisis.”
Continuing, Tapper noted, “I don’t need to tell you voters overwhelmingly disapprove of how the Biden-Harris administration has handled the border by giving the nomination to one of the leaders of the border effort. So aren’t democrats doubling down on one of your party’s biggest vulnerabilities?”
Sen. Warren, responding, first said that things are actually better at the border now than they were under Trump in his last year, telling Tapper, “Well, let’s remember to start with the facts, and that is that border crossings now are lower than they were in the last year of the Trump administration.”
She then said that Kamala would work with Congress to, among other things, “create a pathway to citizenship” for Illegal immigrants, saying, “But recognize and I know that Kamala Harris knows this. This is a problem that ultimately has to be solved by Congress. We need the tools and order to have more resources at the border, to have more resources in the states and cities that are supporting migrants, and I believe we need to create a pathway to citizenship. All of that is part of what we need to do for comprehensive immigration reform. Kamala Harris will work with Congress and get that done.”
Then, contrasting that with former President Donald Trump, Warren said, “Donald Trump, by contrast recognizes that Democrats and Republicans work together starting last fall negotiated a deal. Two days before they were getting ready to vote on that border deal, Donald Trump called on the Republicans who had praised the deal to back away from it because he wanted chaos at the border, because he thought it would help him in this race on November 5.”
Watch her here:
Trump, for his part, vowed to defend the border on Truth Social, saying, “By this time next year, America’s borders will be STRONG, SEALED, and SECURE. Inflation will be in FULL RETREAT. Our economy will be roaring back. Optimism will be surging. The American Dream will be thriving again for citizens of every race, religion, color, and creed. Law and Justice will reign all throughout our land. Freedom will be restored. The flame of liberty will be burning bright. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, the worst administration in the history of our Country, will be a fading memory of the past—And our Great Silent Majority, including the once forgotten men and women of our Country, will be the ones shaping America’s magnificent future when I am the 47th President of the United States!”
