Speaking during a Sunday, January 5 appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” with host Kristen Welker, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) got pressed by her over whether he had lied to the American public when he claimed that President Biden had no issues with his cognitive health. Sen. Schumer got defensive and freaked out when pressed on the matter.
Welker began the spat by playing a clip of Senator Schumer from February of 2024 in which Schumer, commenting on what many thought was President Biden’s then-obvious cognitive health decline, said, “I talk to President Biden regularly or sometimes several times in a week — usually several times in a week. His mental acuity is great. It’s fine. It’s as good as it’s been over the years. All this Right-wing propaganda that his mental acuity has declined is wrong.”
After playing that clip, Welker quite bluntly pressed Sen. Schumer on whether he had lied to the American public with his claims about the mental acuity of the seemingly senile president. She asked, “What do you say to Americans who feel as though you and other top Democrats misled them about President Biden’s mental acuity?”
Schumer was not at all happy with the question. Beginning by shouting at Welker, the longtime senator exclaimed, “We didn’t!” Continuing, he claimed that the soon-to-be former president has a fabulous track record from what happened during his administration, saying, “And let’s look let’s look at President Biden. He’s had an amazing record.”
Continuing, Sen. Schumer then went on to compare, like Mayor Pete Buttigieg recently did, Biden’s seemingly quite small achievements with FDR’s “New Deal” programs, saying, “The legislation we passed, one of the most significant groups of legislation since the New Deal, since Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, putting in, 235 judges a record.”
Then, concluding this part of his defensive reaction to Welker’s use of his own words against him, Sen. Schumer snapped, “And he’s a patriot. He’s a great guy. And when he stepped down, he did it on his own because he thought it was better, not only for the Democratic Party, for America. We should all salute him.”
Welker then pressed Schumer on his thoughts on Biden’s mental acuity from a different angle, asking if the president is still so “great” as regards his cognitive health that he could have been president. She asked, “Do you feel, as we have this conversation today that President Biden could serve another four years had he stayed in the race and potentially won?”
The longtime, very woke senator wasn’t willing to answer the question and instead tried to punt on it by reiterating the same claims about President Biden having such a wonderful and meaningful record of legislative accomplishment and presidential success, saying, “Well, I’m not going to speculate. As I said, I think his record is a stellar one and he’ll go down in history as a really outstanding president.”
