Colby Covington is one of the top fighters in the UFC, and he recently fought a title bout for the welterweight championship with another UFC star, Leon Edwards. Edwards managed to win the fight, and now Covington is arguing that he lost the fight because the three judges in the fight were biased against him thanks to his MAGA views and vocal support of former President Donald Trump.
Such is what Covington claimed after the December 16 fight both in a recent interview with Jesse Watters and during a subsequent interview with Newsmax host Eric Bolling, saying that the 49-46 score in favor of Edwards was based not on merit but on the judges despising him for being so publically pro-Trump.
Speaking to Bolling during his Newsmax interview, Covington claimed that this sort of problem has been an issue throughout his career, saying, “My whole career, it isn’t just this one fight, my whole career I’ve had to battle against the deck being uneven.”
He then argued that he thinks this was an example of that and that he thinks Trump Derangement Syndrome hurt his chances of winning the welterweight championship, saying, “You know the judges scoring against me because they obviously hate Trump. You know, all the people in these positions have big-time Trump Derangement Syndrome. So that’s definitely hurt me in my career.”
Bolling, in response, agreed with Covington about the anti-conservative bias, saying that while the average UFC fan might love Trump, the judges might not. First, Bolling noted the number of Trump allies present for the fight, saying, “You think the judges have it out for you. I know [UFC Chief] Dana White is a friend of Trump. … You can see Kid Rock right next to Trump in there, and I think Dana White was back there as well.”
Continuing, Bolling got to his point about the average UFC fan potentially being far more pro-Trump and pro-MAGA than the average judge at the event, saying, “So you know, people — patriotic Americans, people who matter — love Trump. And the people who make the rules, people in D.C. and the judges, maybe not so much.”
Covington told Jesse Watters much the same thing as he told Bolling, saying, “I think they stack the deck against us because they don’t want we the people to have control of this country again. And that is what Trump stands for. He stands for democracy. He stands for freedom.”
Continuing, he argued that the goal of the elites is to keep down those in the MAGA movement, saying, “So they are going to do everything they can to keep us down. If it is in any sort of judging position in a fight, or any sort of athletic event, they are going to stack the deck against us. It is a sad time in our country. But we need to rise up and we can’t let this keep us down.”
Covington also said that he wants a rematch against Edwards and thinks he can win if he fights him again, saying, “I want a rematch. I deserve it, you know. I think I broke my foot in the first 30 seconds in the fight kicking on his elbow so I want a rematch with this guy. I’m going to come back stronger. I’m just like the American people, you know, we never give up.”
