During a recent interview with Tucker Carlson, political commentator Mark Halperin explained his belief that if former President Donald Trump wins the upcoming election, it will spark “the greatest mental health crisis in the history of the country.” Halperin explained that the nation is so polarized that many Trump opponents will lose connection to those they disagree with, leading to a massive deterioration of social cohesion.
The topic was prompted when Carlson asked Halperin at the end of the podcast interview what he believes will happen if Trump wins the election. “Let’s say Trump wins three weeks from today. What happens? … As you said, a lot of Democrats believe that Trump becoming president is the worst thing that could ever happen,” the former Fox News host asked the journalist.
Halperin replied, “I say this not flippantly. I think it will be the cause of the greatest mental health crisis in the history of the country.” He elaborated that many will reject the direction of the nation under Trump. “Tens of millions of people will question their connection to the nation … to other human beings … to their vision to what their future for them and their children could be like. And that will require an enormous amount of access to mental health professionals,” he continued.
“Are you being serious?” Carlson asked in seeming disbelief. “I’m being a hundred percent serious,” Halperin responded, before claiming Trump retaking the White House in a couple of weeks would “lead to trauma in the workplace, alcoholism, broken marriages.” Illustrating how disastrous it would be, Halperin added, “And it will be sustained, unprecedented, and hideous.”
“Mental health crises often manifest in violence,” Carlson pointed out, suggesting politically motivated violence could occur in the aftermath of the election. “Yeah,” Halperin said in agreement. He then predicted, “I think there’ll be some violence. I think there’ll be workplace fights, fights at kids’ birthday parties … protests that will turn violent.”
Continuing to expound on his assessment of a future with Trump as president again, he said, “I think it will be less anger and more a failure to understand how it could happen. Like the death of a child… Something that is so traumatic that it’s impossible for even the most mentally healthy person to process and incorporate it into their daily life.”
According to Halperin, Democrats feel that “that their fellow citizens supporting Trump is a sign of fundamental evil at the heart of their fellow citizens and of the nation.“ Tucker Carlson shared the interview on his X account, writing, “Mark Halperin has better political sources than anyone in media. He now believes Donald Trump is likely to win. If that happens, Halperin predicts the psychological collapse of the Democratic Party — “greatest mental health crisis in the history of the country.”
