Oliver Anthony, the off-the-grid farmer behind the hit song “Rich Men North of Richmond,” just doubled down on his powerful, populist music that’s already earning him major dividends and has rocketed to the top of the charts. He did so with a song called “I Want To Go Home.”
That song focuses on the world’s seeming march toward yet another world war over Ukraine, a global cataclysm that seems on the horizon and like it will be sparked by a needless, bloody fight over territory that has been fought over for time immemorial. The song also calls out the plight of those whose family farms are being sold, the blight of urban spread and the concrete jungle filled with crime that comes with it, and people blindly believing the media.”
The new song is a single, like “Rich Men North of Richmond.” In it, Anthony sings a similarly populist tune, crooning, “If it weren’t for my old dogs and the good Lord / They’d have me strung up in the psych ward /
Cause every day living in this new world / Is one too many days to me / We’re on the brink of the next World War / And I don’t think nobody’s praying no more / And I ain’t saying I know it for sure / I’m just down on my knees, begging the Lord to take me home / I want to go home”
Continuing, the song goes on to note the powerful propaganda effect of television, with people who watch the cable news propaganda buying into it and going along with what people who hate them say. Anthony sings, “I don’t know which road to go / I just not I didn’t used to wake up feeling this way / Cussing myself every damn day / People have really gone and lost their way / They all just do what the TVs say / I wanna go home.”
In addition to calling out the role of the media in influencing people, Anthony calls out the role of the oligarchs in directing public opinion, saying, “Every damn day is always some kind of bill to pay / People just doing what the rich man say.”

Anthony’s success comes despite his having allegedly turned down one major record label offer for his music. Posting about his success on Facebook, Anthony said, “People in the music industry give me blank stares when I brush off 8 million dollar offers. I don’t want 6 tour buses, 15 tractor trailers and a jet. I don’t want to play stadium shows, I don’t want to be in the spotlight.”
Continuing, he said, “I wrote the music I wrote because I was suffering with mental health and depression. These songs have connected with millions of people on such a deep level because they’re being sung by someone feeling the words in the very moment they were being sung.”
