The union for sergeants in the New York Police Department, the Sergeants Benevolent Association, called out New York’s anti-cop politicians on Wednesday, March 27, warning them to stay away from the funeral for slain NYPD sergeant Jonathan Diller. Particularly, the union called out City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.
The union did so both by speaking to the media to make their stance clear, and by sending a scathing, no-holds-barred letter in which the sergeants’ union slammed the city’s anti-police council members for their faked sympathy for Officer Diller. In the letter, the union scorched the city council members for their anti-cop statements and informed them they were not welcome at the Saturday, March 30 funeral.
Speaking to the New York Post about the anti-cop city council members, SBA President Vincent Vallelong said, “Adrienne Adams, Jumaane Williams and their cohorts should stay home. They detest cops and have no appreciation for what they do. They should stay home and not pretend they are grieving. They have caused enough heartbreak and destruction.”
Vallelong added, speaking to the Post, that he was disgusted with how the city council members have been running the city, saying that their policies have led to deaths. He said, “I’m just disgusted with how all these people are right now. They are not doing what is right. People are killed over this.”
The letter was no less harsh. In it, the union said that those anti-cop city council members who pushed soft-on-crime policies “are as morally responsible for PO Diller’s death as the career criminal who pulled the trigger.” The “career criminal” line is in reference to Officer Diller’s arrest record: he had been arrested nearly two dozen times previously, yet was still out on the streets and able to kill Officer Diller.
The letter also sounded off on both the “many prosecutors” who are soft on crime and the council itself, accusing both of being “complicit in this utter destruction of civilized society in New York.” Continuing, the letter said, “The Council members who are vehemently and inexplicably against public safety are responsible for the carnage in the streets and the heartbreak brought about by PO Diller’s completely avoidable death.”
The letter went on to argue that those members of the city council “who have declared war on the police” must be “investigated for every legislative mistake and misstep they make” and have their actions put under the microscope.

Former President Trump, in contrast to the city council members, both attended the wake and will be attending the funeral of the fallen officer. Writing about the matter on Truth Social, Trump said, “Our heartfelt prayers go out to the family of highly decorated NYPD officer Jonathan Diller, whose life was taken by a murderous career criminal yesterday during a traffic stop in Queens.”
Continuing, he added, “The “thug” in question has 21 prior arrests and just recently got out of prison – he NEVER should have been let back out on the streets. To Officer Diller’s family, and all of the other brave men and women of law enforcement who put your lives on the line every day, we love you, we appreciate you, and we will always stand with you!”
