During a speech on Monday, June 5th, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a new partnership with houses of worship to house migrants to the city, then suggested that he envisions sticking the migrants in “private residences” that have “spare rooms” in which they could house the illegal immigrants.
Introducing that idea, Mayor Adams said that right now the migrants, by which he means illegal immigrants, are being housed in “faith-based locales,” or houses of worship like churches, but that he envisions moving them to private residences with a spare room eventually. Speaking on that, he said, “With discipline, and we’re executing on it, it is my vision to take the next step to this, to go to faith-based locales, and then move to a private residence of..there are residents who are suffering right now because of economic challenges.”
Continuing, he clarified things a bit and indicated that he’d pay people who voluntarily choose to let the migrants move into their spare rooms, so at least he doesn’t plan on commandeering spare rooms in the city to find space for illegals. Making that point, he said he’d rather pay New Yorkers for rooms than out of state corporations, saying, “They have spare rooms, they have locales, and we can find a way to get over the 30 day rule and other rules that government has in place, we can take that $4.2 billion, $4.3, we may be now that we potentially may have to spend, and we can put it back into pockets of everyday New Yorkers, everyday houses of worship, instead of putting it into pockets of corporations. And some of those corporations come from outside our city.”

The comments on the above video tore into Mayor Adams and those that voted for him. One person, for example, said, “I agree! Every person who voted for Eric Adams should have to put up at least one “migrant.” Go!” Another said, “Wonder how many he’s taking in? Bet he’s got plenty of room.”
Still another attacked the plan on its merits, saying, “Translation: We are taking $4.3 billion from your pocket (as taxes) and then will give some of it to those people who will help us house those people from other countries who broke the law and broke in our country. These people who are in our country illegally, will be housed in your home, with your family, and the money spent on then will come from your own hard earned money that we will steal as taxes. Very straight forward calculation.”
Adams gave a few more details on the situation during the conference, saying that the city had struck a deal with about 50 houses of worship in the area to house about 19 men in each house of worship every night for $125 a day.
He said, in an obvious attempt to tamp down on criticism of the situation from religious folks and to encourage more houses of worship to join the partnership, “No matter what faith you practice, caring for those in need is part of every spiritual tradition.”
He also said that the partnership is necessary because NYC is experiencing a flood of migrants, which makes sense given its status as a sanctuary city and its being a beacon of work for many people.
