Independent investigative journalist Nick Shirley, who helped uncover massive fraud in Minneapolis, Minnesota by exposing fake daycare centers run by illegal alien Somalis in December 2025, is being praised across the United States for pouring time and effort into providing coverage of fraud in New York City, when major news networks with billions of dollars in resources are seemingly doing nothing.
In a video clip now going viral on social media platform X, Shirley was asked by one of the co-hosts on Fox News Channel’s “Big Weekend Show,” what inspired him to do what the mainstream media wouldn’t and expose the fraud that has remained in the shadows for years and possibly decades. The co-host started off by praising Shirley for his work, despite not having the vast resources of the mainstream media.
“Now all of these major news organizations with hundreds, if not thousands, of resources as far as reporters, investigative reporters, and here you are, a guy with a cell phone, basically a citizen journalist that has done what you have done in Minnesota, now obviously New York, other states, and even in California, there is legislation to prevent you from doing investigative journalism. It is truly remarkable,” the co-host asked.
“So I guess what I’m trying to say here is that way back when I was in high school, that’s when I first got into broadcasting, WCPTV, Community Access. I was 16 years old,” he continued. “Here you are in your early 20s, making a difference that no news organization has made in some time. What made you want to get into this? What was the inspiration?”
Shirley responded, “Well, I just started seeing what’s happening in our country, from the border to the fentanyl crisis to the election, and then I eventually got caught wind of the fraud, and so I’ve been seeing what’s happening in the country. And I was wondering, like, why are people not reporting on this? It’s not even right or left. It’s what’s wrong and what’s right.”
The young citizen journalist then pointed out that Americans were being defrauded by members of the Somali community in Minnesota and innocent people were being trafficked by horrible criminals, many of them illegal aliens who worked for vicious cartels based in Mexico. “And obviously, what was happening was wrong. Our money was being defrauded by Somali learning centers, and then you have these other adult daycares that are taking our money? People were getting trafficked at the border, and yet nobody wanted to cover that,” Shirley continued.
“And so I was just starting to report on what I saw, and it was never right or left. It was just like this is what’s actually happening, and people obviously like it because I’m not trying to show, I’m not trying to paint any narrative when I go out and do these videos,” he said at the conclusion of the clip.

Shirley’s work has become so influential that it even led to Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, to get involved in the fight against fraud, a major step forward that should help turn his exposes into durable gains in the fight against fraud. For reference, Shirley published an hour-long video on YouTube on July 10, 2026, in which he claims to have found $190 million in fraud taking place in social adult daycare centers and pharmacies across Flushing, a neighborhood in Queens, that is largely populated by Korean and Chinese individuals.
“One of the largest fraud schemes in America is taking place in New York City as billions of dollars are being defrauded by organized Korean and Chinese mafias, along with other foreigners operating and stealing taxpayer dollars,” Shirley stated in the video. The footage then shows Shirley visiting several daycares, telling members of the staff he is looking to sign up his grandmother for their services.
After gaining access to the buildings, he starts to ask them questions and share concerns about their financial disclosures. Later in the video, Oz joins Shirley, explaining how difficult it is for law enforcement to stay “caught up on the fraud.” He then added, “The big issue with these centers is not that they are providing social adult daycare, it’s that it’s a clubhouse for criminals.”
