Kansas City Chiefs Star Chris Jones became visibly emotional while the gospel vocalist Lanell Lightfoot sang the national anthem before their playoff matchup against the Houston Texans. Jones has continually been observed showing his emotions while the national anthem is performed before his games, demonstrating his apparent pride for his country.
Footage from the pre-game ceremony showed Jones standing on the field passionately watching Lanell deliver a beautiful rendition of our nation’s anthem as a single tear ran down his face. Jones’ patriotism sparked an outpouring of support from users on social media, who applauded the professional athlete for his passion for the country.
Television writer John Tharp wrote, “KC Chiefs defensive leader Chris Jones sheds a tear during National Anthem at Arrowhead vs Houston Texans AFC divisional. America baby! Kansas City Threepeat journey.” Another person wrote, “It’s refreshing to see a man show emotion when listening to and watching someone perform the National Anthem.”
Another supportive fan commented, “Some people love our country. Years of hard work and thankful to be part of this nation, this team. Love to see Washington vs Chiefs in superbowl. Great quarterbacks dueling in heavy weight fight.” National NFL analyst Lindsey Ok said, “We knew Chris Jones was gonna go off when he cried during the anthem.”
Jones also was seen shedding a tear while Reba McEntire performed the national anthem at the Super Bowl last year. The football player that had tears running down his face during the National Anthem loves Jesus and America,” Evangelist Tim Lee wrote about the incident last year. “Kansas City Chiefs, Chris Jones, 6’6” 310 lbs had tears while Reba McEntire sang America’s National Anthem at the Super Bowl is the real deal.”
The post continued, “On Jones’ wrist during the game were a couple of wristbands, which proclaim his faith in Jesus. One says “I am Second,” a phrase he also has in his Twitter bio. The other says “I play for Him.” He says he’s worn them since entering the NFL in 2016.” … “It’s a Christian wristband,” Jones told Sports Spectrum ahead of Super Bowl LIV. “I am second, God is first. And I also have a wristband [that says] ‘I play for Him.’ I play for God, Jesus Christ. I’m a very religious guy. I believe my faith is everything and that’s what I live by.”
Lee concluded, “There’s so much more to his story. He still goes with his grandma to church. He lived in his grandmas 1000 sq ft home with 10 other people in high school. He got a job so he could buy his little sister chicken tenders so she would have something to eat. In high school when he wasn’t on the field playing he would run water out to his teammates.”
