During an interview on the campaign trail with Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance, NBC host Kristin Welker’s “cheap shot” response to the Ohio senator’s talking point on the economy was quickly shut down in a brilliant rebuttal. In the many hostile interviews Vance has performed ahead of the election, he has garnered praise from conservatives for his ability to perform various attacks with confidence and unparalleled professionalism.
At one point during the conversation, Vance highlighted how the status quo under America’s current leaders has led the United States into a period of decline. He cited issues like the open southern border and persistent inflation under the Biden-Harris administration. “Kristen, I think the fact that people can afford groceries, the fact that our we can’t meet our recruitment goals in the military, the fact that Americans have a wide open southern border, that’s a way bigger threat than any foreign threat. And yes, it’s caused by broken leadership,” Vance said.
In response, Welker vaguely stated, “And yet, senator, you know, inflation is coming down. Let me ask you about some of what we said higher…” However, Vance refused to let that comment slide, stating, “It’s 25 percent higher than it was when Donald Trump the Oval Office….If Americans feel like inflation is a solved problem, then maybe they should vote for Kamala Harris. If you feel like the price of groceries, if you feel like the price of housing is too high, if you feel like inflation is not over, then Donald Trump is your man.”
Conservatives on social media applauded Vance for his overall handling of the interview, particularly how he dismantled the “cheap shot rebuttal” Welker offered on inflation. One user on X wrote, “NBC’s Kristen Welker tied her “enemies within” question to China, and got WRECKED by @JDVance1 as well, especially when she tried to throw her “inflation is down” cheap shot rebuttal at the end, per her custom.”
During another moment in the conversation, Vance brilliantly addressed a hard-hitting question from Welker about Trump’s comments regarding the “enemy within” the United States. Many Democrats have interpreted this as a call to persecute Trump’s domestic political enemies. After Welker questioned how the “enemies within” could be a more significant threat than adversarial foreign nations, Vance set the record straight.
He said, “What he said, and I do agree with this, what he said is that the biggest threat we have in our country, it’s not a foreign adversary, because we can handle these guys. We can handle foreign conflicts. We can’t handle look under Nancy Pelosi, his long life and public leadership, the United States has gone from the preeminent industrial power of the world to second, next to China.”
Continuing, Trump running mate stated, “That fundamentally belongs on Nancy Pelosi shoulders. And if we’re going to have a more prosperous country, we’ve got to recognize our own leadership. Is why we lost our industrial base to China. Our own leadership is failing to lead this country into peace and prosperity. And of course, Kamala Harris, look what I look at the biggest threats to America.”
