Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), 84, was spotted returning to Congress on Monday with the assistance of a walker. Last month, Pelosi fell down a marble staircase during a trip to Luxembourg, after which she underwent emergency hip replacement surgery. The incident has ignited conversation online about the age of Congressional leaders and whether term limits should be imposed.
As background, reports from December 13 indicate that Pelosi broke her hip during the fall in Luxembourg while visiting the European nation to commemorate the Battle of the Bulge Anniversary. At the time The American Tribune reported on comments from Ian Krager, a spokesman on behalf of the speaker emerita, detailing the fall.
Krager said, outlining the accident and how it went down. “While traveling with a bipartisan Congressional delegation in Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation,” he said.
Furthermore, Krager indicated that Pelosi was being attended to by “medical professionals, stating that she was in the hospital. He continued, “Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals.” He added, “She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements to honor the courage of our servicemembers during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history.”
Explaining that Pelosi sought out to demonstrate her respect to America’s veterans, he said, “Speaker Emerita Pelosi conveys her thanks and praise to our veterans and gratitude to people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their service in World War II and their role in bringing peace to Europe.” He also noted, “Speaker Emerita Pelosi was personally and officially honored to travel with the distinguished delegation, many of whom had family members who fought in World War II — including her uncle, Johnny. She looks forward to returning home to the U.S. soon.”
Additionally, Pelosi’s staff had said, “Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi is traveling with a bipartisan Congressional Delegation to Belgium and Luxembourg to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. On Friday, December 13 and Saturday, December 14, the delegation will take part in observances of the anniversary along with veterans and their families, active duty servicemembers, government and military officials and foreign dignitaries.”
Sharing a clip of Pelosi’s return to Congress with a walker, conservative commentator Collin Rugg posted to X, “84-year-old Nancy Pelosi seen using a walker during Donald Trump’s election certification. Pelosi has stated frequently in recent months that Trump is “unwell” to be president of the United States. The elderly woman is using a walker after she fell down a set of stairs and broke her hip, which required surgery.”
Noting that elderly politicians is not an issue exclusive to Democrats, Benny Johnson wrote, “Mitch McConnell in a wheelchair. Nancy Pelosi with a walker. This is just sad. Term limits are needed for the health and wellbeing of elected officials.” Watch the clip of Nancy Pelosi’s return to Congress after her fall in Europe last month.
