Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) recently appeared on CNN, offering a defense of President Biden after his debacle during last Thursday night’s debate against former President Donald Trump. In the wake of Biden’s poor performance, there has been substantial concern regarding Biden’s capacity to serve a second term.
While speaking to Dana Bash on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Pelosi downplayed these concerns about Biden. Seemingly ignoring the president’s signs of rampant deterioration, the California Democrat shifted the focus of the conversation to former President Trump, who she suggested has “dementia” based on the supposed analysis of “health care professionals.” Pelosi criticized Trump, claiming that “his thoughts do not go together” and calling him a liar.
“This is an opportunity for Joe Biden to go out there and show he has the stamina and the rest,” Pelosi said. “And, by the way, while the press — and, for some reason, they don’t — there are health care professionals who think that Trump has dementia, that his connection — his thoughts do not go together, not only that he just lies; he doesn’t even know the truth,” Pelosi told Bash.
According to Pelosi, her personal “up close” experience with Biden leads her to believe that Biden is fully capable of dealing with the vast complexities presented to the president of the United States. “So, if we’re just talking about mental acuity, let’s be fair about it,” she added. “I don’t think Tom Friedman thinks that Donald Trump should be president of the United States. And while he may be saying we’re enablers, we see Joe Biden up close. We know how attuned he is to the issues, how informed he is.”
The former House speaker further suggested that she frequently discusses legislation with the incumbent president, where his engagement in such meetings demonstrates his mental aptitude. Regardless, she conceded that the debate did not go well for the president but maintained that it didn’t detract from his overall presidency.
However, while Pelosi, 84, was defending Biden’s mental acuity, she, ironically, appeared to freeze up and stumble over her sentence in a manner much like President Biden often does. “When I debate with him about legislation — and not debate, but discuss it with him. He’s right there. So in any case, it was a bad night. Let’s not sugarcoat that. It was a bad night. It was a great presidency,” she concluded.
Despite Pelosi’s defense of Biden, there appeared to be a unanimous agreement among liberal-leaning media that the debate was a disaster for the president that merits legitimate conversations about his potential replacement. Watch Pelosi’s CNN appearance below:
The American Tribune reported on a post-debate CNN panel that expressed grave concerns about the ramifications of Biden’s performance. CNN host John King claimed that powerful Democrats were actively having conversations about having Biden step down from his reelection campaign.
King said, “Some of those conversations include should we go to the White House and asked the president step aside? Others are, other the conversations are about should prominent Democrats go public with that call. But because they feel this debate was so terrible, they do say in moments in a debate later, the president got better and got his footing. But then at the end, even his closing statement was a little halting.”
