The New York appellate court slashed Trump’s necessary bond payment in half on Monday, March 25, slashing it from $464 million to $175 million, an amount Trump said he could pay “in cash.” Predictably, numerous figures on the left freaked out over the decision, such as an MSNBC guest who claimed the decision shows Trump has his “own private system of justice.”
As background, Judge Arthur Engoron had put a 30-day stay on his late-February ruling that Trump was guilty, meaning that Trump had until March 25 to pay the full fee plus interest, which totaled $464 million. It was unclear whether Trump could pay that massive sum, would have to sell assets, or if AG James would seize them. However, the appellate court slashed the amount Trump needed to pay and gave him ten more days to do so.
That decision infuriated Tristian Snell, the former New York assistant attorney general. Snell appeared as a guest on MSNBC’s “José Díaz-Balart Reports” and, during his appearance, was asked about the recent ruling and what in-courtroom process might have led to it.
Snell, angrily responding, said, “Do we even need to ask? Honestly, this is so infuriating I don’t even know what to do. I don’t even know if I care what the process is that these judges are arriving at. Whatever it is, it’s flawed. I can tell you that much.” Snell continued, “This is a different process for this person. We have decided that he gets his own private court of justice.”
Continuing, Snell angrily attacked Trump for having a private plane and private golf clubs, saying, “He has a private plane. He has private clubs that he lives in. He basically has fashioned himself his own private militia to try to take over the Capitol. Now he’s getting his own private system of justice. This is an absolute travesty. It would not happen for anybody else, anybody else. It would be like, sorry, buddy, you lost. Pay up. For him, he gets his own set of rules.”
Not done, Snell then angrily alleged that the situation represents a “gross miscarriage of justice,” claiming, “The appellate court has now just decided they’re going to swoop in and just change it, and that’s it, and now the AG’s office can now try to go up above them. I don’t know if there’s a remedy for the AG’s office to go up to the court of appeals, which is our high court here in New York and try to get them to basically countermand this order, but in my view, this is without knowing more, unless there’s some sort of other extenuating circumstance that we’re going to learn here, this appears to be an absolute gross miscarriage of justice.”
Watch Snell here:
Snell wasn’t alone in his claims. David Henderson, a former prosecutor, during the same MSNBC segment, claimed, “The playbook is different for former President Trump. We were literally talking about this the last time you and I discussed this case. I expect for them to do something for him that’s different than what you see for everybody else when they go to court. So here he’s given more time to pay less money. That’s what it comes down to.”
