In a viral video posted to social media, Edwin Reed, a Minneapolis business owner, clashed with Angela Harrelson, George Floyd’s aunt, five years after Floyd’s death. The businessman criticized the Floyd family for profiting from his death and claimed that the $50,000 intended to rebuild local businesses after the violent BLM riots was misappropriated by outsiders.
For context, George Floyd died in May 2020 during a viral confrontation that was captured on video. In response, the city erupted into riots, causing $2 billion in damages nationwide, with Minneapolis suffering significantly. At the time, President Trump condemned the violence, calling for law and order and deploying federal resources to protect local communities.
In any case, Reed lashed out against the BLM narrative in a viral clip that was posted to X on May 25, 2025. In the clip, he stated, “Let me tell you something, when they gave away the $50,000 that your family was handing out to the businesses to help them, you know how many people were up there?”
Continuing, he said, “That wasn’t even from this area. There was (sic) 72 people up there trying to take that money from all we didn’t get a dime. None of us had got a d*mn dime of that money to help us. Did you know that? Oh, my God. Y’all didn’t even know that. Yeah, that’s what I’m trying to tell you.”
Clearly distressed, the businessman said, “They wouldn’t know that. We know that because I was there when it happened. That’s what I’m trying to tell you. I was in the room when they all showed up, all these white folks that we’ve never even seen over here asking for the money that your family was putting down for these businesses. They took that money from us. We never got a dime.”
The clip was initially posted by prominent conservative Dom Lucre, who said, “🔥🚨BREAKING: A black business owner snapped on George Floyd’s auntie 5 years after Floyd’s death because he claims that Floyd’s family led to the demise of many Black businesses and how ‘Minneapolis is still burning after his death.’”
In the comments under his post, social media users expressed their anger with the unfair situation. One such comment said, “Had the people of Minneapolis not f**king destroyed said businesses, they wouldn’t have needed the money! So f**k that nonsense. NO money should’ve been given to rebuild anything in the first place. Let the community rot!”

Similarly, another user added, “I live a mile away from this square in Minneapolis, and I’m amazed that more business owners haven’t filed similar suits against the city. Much of the area has never recovered, and it seems like an energy of fear and anger has been hanging over the area ever since.”

Rounding out the comments, one user noted, “The Floyd family took in a tidy sum of $27 million because Floyd overdosed during his arrest, and the riots across the country did $2 billion in damages, including 40 federal buildings, and there were 20 fatalities. Small businesses took a huge financial hit while the Floyd’s became multimillionaires. Sometimes life just isn’t fair.”
