In a wild moment toward the beginning of Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, the first of President Donald Trump’s second term, Speaker Mike Johnson and had the Sergeant at Arms throw Rep. Al Greene from the House Chamber after he started causing a ruckus as Trump spoke. The incident followed warnings and threats from Johnson that he would do thus if necessary.
The moment came as Rep. Greene refused to follow Speaker Johnson’s orders and remain quiet and respectful of the president, instead standing, wildly waving his cane, and trying to shout over President Trump as Trump tried giving the early part of his State of the Union speech. It was because Rep. Greene was acting in such a disruptive manner that Speaker Johnson had Greene tossed from the event.
Republicans in the chamber cheered wildly after Speaker Johnson ordered the Sergeant-at-Arms to remove Greene from the House Chamber over his repeated disruptions, with the video of the incident quite funnily showing half the chamber standing and applauding as the other half booed and glowered.
Announcing the news on X (formerly Twitter), was new-focused X account Nick Sortor, who said, “ #BREAKING: Speaker Johnson just ORDERED the Sergeant at Arms to forcefully REMOVE Rep. Al Green after he had an h hinged meltdown while Trump was speaking. These people are DERANGED.”
Commenters on Sortor’s post left messages of agreement like, “Good. Expell them from school like the little children they are acting like,” “Rep. Al Green’s meltdown during Trump’s speech, only highlights the Democrats’ out-of-control behavior,” and “Weak men always break when real power enters the room. Al Green couldn’t handle Trump speaking because deep down, he knows the system he defends is crumbling.”
Another commenter, noting what seems to be going on, said, “When your entire party platform is built on Trump Derangement Syndrome, eventually the mask slips — and Al Green just gave everyone a front-row seat. These aren’t leaders. They’re unhinged activists cosplaying as lawmakers, and they can’t even hold it together when faced with a speech. The real question — if this is how they behave in public, what do you think they’re plotting behind closed doors? And how much of their “work” is just pure, seething hatred wrapped in official titles?”

On the other side of things, a Democrat account tried framing the incident as a victory for the left, saying, “Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has a meltdown and threatens to remove Democrats, notably Al Greene, from the House chambers during Donald Trump’s joint address of Congress. Which he does 30 seconds later. What a total disaster for Donald Trump.”
That claim is patently absurd, as it was the Democrats who were taking the opportunity to make fools of themselves by screaming and shouting, being generally disruptive, as the president tried giving his speech. So, in tossing one of the worst offenders, one who is widely detested and was causing problems well after being warned to stop, Speaker Johnson showed firmness and gave his party’s base some red meat to chew on, watching with glee as Greene was tossed from the chamber.
