CEO and founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg recently addressed the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump during an interview with Bloomberg. According to the social media pioneer, Trump’s reaction to being shot was “one of the most bad*ss things” he had ever witnessed in his life while acknowledging the emotions it invoked across the country.
While Trump was speaking at a highly anticipated rally last Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania, 20-year-old Matthew Thomas Crooks fired multiple gunshots at the former president. However, Trump miraculously survived, having barely turned his head at the last second, narrowly avoiding an almost certainly lethal headshot that only grazed his ear. He stood up, blood streaked across his face, defiantly raising his fist in the air, mouthing “fight” to the crowd before the Secret Service ushered him out of the venue.
“I’ve done some stuff personally in the past. I’m not planning on doing that this time. And that includes, you know, not endorsing either of the candidates,” Zuckerberg said in the interview. The Facebook chief executive had come under fire surrounding his political involvement in the 2020 election where Zuckerberg reportedly spent over $400 million to influence the election.
Zuckerberg commented on the unprecedented times that have led up to the assassination attempt, where President Trump’s defiant survival was one of the most “bad*ss” events he has ever observed. “Now, look, I mean, there’s obviously a lot of crazy stuff going on in the world. I mean the historic events over the last, like over the weekend, and I mean personal note, seeing Donald Trump, get up after getting shot in the face and pump his fist in the air with the American flag, is one of the most bad*ss things I’ve ever seen in my life,” he said.
The social media guru added that the event has undeniably spurred an emotional reaction from much of the country, leading to increased support from voters. “But, but look, I mean, it’s, you know, as and I think look at some level, as an American, it’s like hard to not get kind of emotional about that spirit. And that fight. I think that that’s why a lot of people like the guy,” he continued.
However, in the aftermath of the 2020 election, Zuckerberg has been the subject of harsh criticism over his political philanthropy. Many have claimed the Facebook CEO engaged in a “carefully orchestrated attempt” to influence the 2020 after the hundreds of millions he donated to non-profits which then funded local election offices in 2,500 counties across 49 states.
“My reaction is that this was a carefully orchestrated attempt to convert official government election offices into get-out-the-vote operations for one political party and to insert political operatives into election offices in order to influence and manipulate the outcome of the election,” according to Hans von Spakovsky, a Republican who now runs the Heritage Foundation’s Election Law Reform Initiative.
