Recently, a man was banned from all Buc-ee’s locations after bringing his service duck inside of a Tennessee location. The man posted a video on YouTube, titled “How to get banned from every Buc-Ee’s in the world (for life),” documenting the experience.
Justin Wood brought the service animal, named Wrinkle the Duck into the Buc-ee’s, where aquatic bird garnered positive attention from numerous shoppers on the premises. Many were intrigued by the service duck, a unique animal for service duty usually fulfilled by dogs, and wanted to pet the animal. Wrinkle sat in a stroller for most the duration of their time in the store, popping out every once in a while to interact with other patrons.
Wood uploaded footage of the event to his YouTube channel “seDUCKtive” which currently has a massive following of 2.74 million subscribers. As of writing the article the video has over 180,000 views and counting. However, as the title of the video hinted, the Buc-ee’s experience did not go entirely as planned.
While in the store, employees approached Woods informing him that the duck was not allowed inside the store. Woods argued that Wrinkle was a “service duck,” to which one employee responded that only “service dogs” were permitted inside the store.
“OK, but she is a service animal” he told the employee, stating that he could provide the store various forms of documentation to prove the claim. They were allowed to keep shopping in the store until a third employee approached him, “unfortunately your animal can’t be in here.”
“There’s no pets in here. Your animal, even if it’s considered a service animal, you have to be able to contain it, and it can fly out,” the employee added. “If it was a dog it’d have to be on a leash.” Wood asked, “Can I put her on a leash?” The employee responded that it would be fine. At that point, Wood put Wrinkle on an imaginary leash and the duck continued to follow him around the store.
As Wood interacting with a police officer, who eventually informed him that he was banned from all Buc-ee’s properties in the nation, he defended his service duck explaining, “She did nothing but make everybody happy in there.”
Buc-ee’s pet policy states “The Health Code prohibits live animals, including dogs, where food could potentially be contaminated. There are exceptions, however, for service animals and animals that work with police officers. For people with disabilities, specially trained service animals play an absolutely vital role. They make it possible for those with disabilities to work, travel, stay safe, and, in some cases, stay alive.”
