House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries got roasted on both sides by a “junior reporter” during Take Your Child to Work Day, after he decided to call on the children from the Capitol Hill press corps. The very first question was, “Why do voters view Democrats so poorly?” Jeffries tried to go with the flow and laugh off the question, but it’s one that reporters, regardless of political slant, have been wondering since President Donald Trump defeated former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024.
Jeffries attempted to save face by offering a long-winded explanation of voter distrust in institutions. Keep in mind, these are children, even though the question was a rather mature one. “There’s a great frustration that applies to every organized institution in this country, and Democrats are not immune from that,” the New York Democrat responded.
Jeffries then added, “Consistently in state after state and race after race and contest after contest, irrefutably, the American people are choosing the Democratic Party.” The House minority leader then took questions from other “junior reporters” present. One of the questions was if he would have voted in favor of expelling Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick if she hadn’t stepped down from her post.
“She did the right thing in stepping down,” Jeffries went on to say, according to POLITICO. There were a few lighthearted questions asked during the event, including what Jeffries’ favorite candy was. Sugar-free Hershey’s chocolate was his response. Another child asked what he originally wanted to be when he grew up? He said he wanted to play in the NBA or be a rap star.
Another junior reporter asked what was next for him and the Democratic Party. “As Democrats, we’re fighting one battle after another, pushing back against the extremism that we believe is being released on the American people by Donald Trump and my colleagues on the other side of the aisle,” Jeffries told the young reporter.
The comment section on a Facebook post of video taken during the event was as lively as ever, with many praising the child who asked the first question. One individual commented, “Sounds like a genuinely honest question to me,” complete with laughing emojis. Another quipped, “Sounds like a good segment for ‘Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader.”
Another user slammed Jeffries’ speaking delivery, asking, “Why does it always sound like he’s reading a ‘Cat in the Hat’ book?” One commenter pointed out that Jeffries didn’t really provide the child with an answer to the question, which, in reality, is an answer. “Not giving an answer to a question, usually, shows their lack of preparedness for the barrage of questions coming!” the comment said.

Someone else noted that the answer was essentially stating that the Democratic Party would simply continue to try brainwashing young people to believing that socialism works. “In other words….. we have to continue to ramp up efforts brainwashing young Americans that we can make everything awesome and free. No hard work necessary,” the comment read.
