Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger got a brutal reception during a visit to Galax, Virginia, as a crowd of angry constituents erupted in loud booing when the Democratic governor appeared before them. Video from the event shows Spanberger being greeted by sustained jeers from the crowd, giving the newly elected governor a very public demonstration of hostility in the heart of rural Virginia.
The booing was loud enough to dominate the event as people in attendance made their anger with the governor unmistakable. Rather than a few isolated hecklers somewhere on the edge of the gathering, the reaction was broad, with Spanberger forced to move through an openly hostile reception. The clip quickly began circulating online as Republicans pointed to it as evidence that the Democratic governor is running into serious resistance outside Virginia’s heavily Democratic population centers.
Former Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares was among those who highlighted the footage, posting the clip to X and hammering Spanberger over the reception she received. “Governor Spanberger booed in Galax,” Miyares wrote. “Turns out when you break your campaign promise, attempt a Leftist power grab pushing an unconstitutional gerrymandering effort In order to silence rural Virginia voices, coupled with massive tax increases, it results in a frosty reception,” Miyares continued.
The location of the event was also relevant to the situation in the Old Dominion. Galax sits in southwestern Virginia, far removed politically and geographically from the Democratic strongholds of Northern Virginia and Richmond that have increasingly driven statewide Democratic victories. Spanberger won the governor’s race in 2025 while presenting herself as a comparatively moderate Democrat focused heavily on affordability, competence, and kitchen-table issues.
The anger comes as Spanberger has become deeply involved in one of the most contentious political fights in the Commonwealth: Democrats’ attempt to redraw Virginia’s congressional districts before the end of the decade. Spanberger supported an effort to change the state constitution and permit a new congressional map even though she had said during the gubernatorial campaign that she was not planning to pursue mid-decade redistricting.
Republicans accused Democrats of attempting to engineer a map that would dramatically weaken Republican representation in Virginia and reduce the political influence of rural areas like the one Spanberger visited when the booing broke out. The existing congressional delegation was relatively competitive between the parties, while Republicans warned that a Democratic-drawn replacement could leave the GOP with only a tiny fraction of Virginia’s congressional seats.

The fight eventually reached the Supreme Court of Virginia, where the Democratic redistricting effort suffered a major defeat. The court ruled that lawmakers had failed to comply with Virginia’s constitutional requirements in the process used to advance the amendment, effectively killing the effort. Miyares, who had been one of its most vocal Republican opponents, celebrated the decision and argued that Democrats had attempted to circumvent the system Virginians had approved for drawing political districts.
Spanberger has defended the broader push by arguing that Virginia needed the ability to respond to Republican redistricting efforts elsewhere in the country. That argument did little to quiet Republican accusations that Democrats were attempting to use their control of Richmond to reshape congressional representation for partisan advantage.
Taxes and spending have added another source of friction. Republicans have repeatedly attacked the Democratic-controlled government in Richmond over tax proposals and a two-year state budget that climbed to roughly $207 billion, while Spanberger has disputed claims that she personally approved every tax proposal introduced by Democratic lawmakers. Her administration has also pointed to measures it describes as tax relief, including changes to the standard deduction. None of those excuses appeared to buy Spanberger much goodwill from the crowd in Galax.
