A major question currently on the minds of many American voters is whether there will be presidential debates ahead of the upcoming election where former President Donald Trump and incumbent Joe Biden will go head-to-head.
Given many high-profile instances drawing into question Biden’s mental and physical capabilities since he became president, many speculate that a live, televised debate against the formidable Donald Trump would be a disaster for the 81-year-old.
The topic of presidential debates came up in a recent White House press conference where Peter Doocy questioned press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre if she could provide insight as to whether Biden would participate. Jean-Pierre seemingly sidestepped the question, refusing to answer it directly.
“Just for clarity, it’s possible that there will be no Joe Biden, Donald Trump debates,” Doocy asked. “Is that what you’re excited about? Is that what you want to say?” she hit back at Doocy, not providing a direct answer to Doocy’s question. “Because you keep asking me about three, four, or five different times in different ways.”
Doocy proceeded to rephrase his question and ask KJP how Biden would perform in a hypothetical debate.”How would President Biden do in a debate?” he pressed her. “How would he do in a debate, it’s been four years?”
The press secretary pointed to the apparent success of Biden’s 2023 State of the Union Address, where he supposedly “took on” Republicans, defending the Democratic agenda of expanding specific programs and fighting “for the American people.”
“You literally saw just last year back in January 2023 at the last State of the Union take on Republicans during…giving a major speech. He took them on as they were heckling him. He took them on and said he was going to fight for programs essentially said he was fighting for programs that the American people needed Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. He stood there and fought for the American people. I mean, that was pretty impressive. Some of y’all reported on that.”
As we approach the presidential election later this year, a pressing issue on the minds of many American voters is Joe Biden’s physical and mental fitness. Many have speculated that the incumbent 81-year-old president cannot endure a live debate against the fiery wrath of Donald Trump.
Particularly damaging for Biden’s reelection efforts amid the widespread concerns about his cognitive capabilities was the conclusion of Special Counsel Robert Hur when investigating Biden’s mishandling of classified information. The investigation’s conclusion stated that criminal charges should not be brought against Biden partly because of his elderly age and memory complications.
“We have also considered that, at trial, Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,” the report said. “Based on our direct interactions with and observations of him, he is someone for whom many jurors will want to identify reasonable doubt.”
