White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre recently criticized the governors of states who are diverting illegal immigrants from their communities to sanctuary cities and blue states around the country. KJP described the action of sending migrants to self-described “sanctuaries” as “shameful.”
Jean-Pierre slammed the Republican initiatives during an appearance on CNN, suggesting the states deal with the issues internally. “The busing of migrants, the putting them on flights, it is shameful that that is occurring. And instead of — if the governor really wants to deal with this issue, he should talk to the senators in his state,” she said.
Popular conservative account X, “End Wokeness,” shared a clip of the CNN segment with the caption “WH Press Secretary: “It is shameful” to send illegal aliens to sanctuary cities.” Social media users were quick to rebuke KJP, making many different counterarguments against her assertion.
One user commented under the post, pointing out the very definition of a supposed sanctuary city that should to be inviting to the inflow of migrants throughout the American interior. “By definition, sanctuary cities welcome all illegal aliens openly. If they don’t want illegals then they should stop calling themselves sanctuary cities. The WH Press Secretary only wants Republican-led cities at the border to suffer from illegal immigration. That’s shameful.”
Other commenters continued with the idea that Democrats would like to isolate illegal immigrants to red states. Some suggested that liberals intend to shift the voting demographic in border states, such as Texas, through unfettered illegal immigration. “We were supposed to keep them in red states so they can flip them blue! We weren’t supposed to send them to blue states and piss off Democrat voters!”
Tom Moore sounded off on leaders of these localities for essentially “virtue signaling” about their “sanctuary” status but refusing to follow through with the actual responsibility of upholding what that entails. “Hypocrisy alert,” Moore posted. “Sanctuary city mayors welcomed the Fed Funds with open arms and the virtue signaling, but not the responsibility that actually comes with caring for illegal aliens. WH Press Secretary KJP parrots feigned outrage in support of liberal mayors.”
“I mean they asked for it. That’s not even being slightly caustic, it’s precisely what announcing yourself as a sanctuary city is,” Robert Patrick Lewis added to the discussion, emphasizing what it means for a city to be designated as a “sanctuary.”
Others have criticized the federal government for not getting to the root of the migrant crisis and securing the southern border. In light of the Biden administration’s seeming inability to get a handle on the border, House Speaker Mike Johnson accused Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of “intentionally” allowing the border crisis to unfold.
“I believe Secretary Mayorkas is an abject failure, but it’s not because of incompetence. I believe he has done this intentionally. I think these are intentional policy decisions that he has made, and I think there must be accountability for that,” Johnson said during an appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” Republican lawmakers have suggested possibly impeaching Mayorkas amide the Biden administration’s failure at the border.
