Resurfaced footage of famous rapper Kendrick Lamar’s 2022 performance in Glastonbury, Scotland, has sparked controversy after the artist appeared to mock Jesus Christ during an onstage endorsement of abortion under so-called “women’s rights.” As a result, some are calling for Lamar’s upcoming performance during the 2025 Super Bowl to be boycotted.
As background, Lamar’s performance in 2022 came after the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June of that year, a substantial win for pro-life conservatives. In the footage of him onstage, Lamar stood on stage wearing a crown of thorns, resembling what Christ wore during his crucifixion, with blood pouring down his face, staining a white t-shirt. He repeatedly shouted into a microphone, “They judge you, they judge Christ. Godspeed for women’s rights.”
Christian commentator Jon Root shared the clip on X, maintaining that he will not be watching Kendrick’s halftime performance, urging other Christians to withdraw their support for the rapper. “I will be boycotting Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show Anyone that mocks Jesus Christ by wearing a crown of thorns & at the same time, advocates for the killing of babies, calling it “women’s rights”, doesn’t deserve the support of Christians…” he said.
Various others echoed this sentiment on social media. Conservative commentator Nick Adams similarly said, “DISGUSTING! Kendrick Lamar mocks Jesus Christ by wearing a crown of thorns while performing a satanic rap in support of abortion. I will be BOYCOTTING Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show performance tomorrow. Who’s with me?”
Others called out the double standard against Christianity, where one person said, “Everyone is ok by mocking Christians but imagine if he did that with Muslims. There would be blood on the streets already. We living in a very soft society. Muslims protect their religion and they make themselves respect, on the other hand, Christian’s are the ones forgiving when things like this happens. I’m not religious at all but if there is no respect for religions or cultures we are cooked.”
Some users drew parallels to the 2024 Olympics in Paris, which had a controversial opening ceremony that mocked the Last Supper between Jesus and his disciples. “This is disgusting. This is the kind of behavior at the Olympic opening ceremonies that made me boycott the Olympics that I love. I still watched individual clips of the great athlete’s and congratulated them but people need to stand up for what they believe in in the face of evil. He should not be performing at the superbowl,” one person stated.
Others predicted the major sporting event to be used to attack the Trump administration. “I predict the ratings will be a bit lower this year. It’s a last gasp at protesting the Trump chaos that has been loosed upon the word (I mean that in the best way possible). Especially celebrities will go to extremes like this as a last ditch effort,” another user commented.

One Christian user offered hope and encouragement to fellow followers of Christ. “Seeing stuff likes this makes me understand that I am following the right God. There is a reason why everyone mocks Jesus. There is a reason why you can’t do this with any other religion. And there is a reason why every Religion has a Jesus figure and mentions Jesus’s teachings Hold strong to your faith, we knew we were going to be mocked,” they posted.
