Disgraced comedian Kathy Griffin made a recent appearance on “The View,” where she lamented that she had been out of work for roughly six years since a controversial stunt impacted her professional career. The panelists on the show seemingly cheered her return to the spotlight.
In 2017, Griffin participated in an infamous photo shoot depicting herself holding the blood-covered, decapitated head of then-President Donald Trump. The picture instantly sparked widespread backlash toward the comedian.
During a segment on the left-leaning daytime talk show, Griffin complained to the panelists of ladies that she has “been through hell and back.” She emphatically stated, “I’ve been through hell and back people. Hell and back.” Whoopi Goldberg chimed in, “But you are back and that’s important.”
“This is your first tour in six years,” Goldberg continued. “Six years I was out of work because of that…” Griffin exclaimed before pausing. She added, “There I said what it was, all about a picture I took, making fun of the president. What you’re supposed to do as a comic.”
While Griffin may claim she was simply “making fun” of former President Trump, it turns out that some, including the federal government, may interpret the action of holding the severed head of a sitting U.S. president as a possible call to violence.
According to reports, Griffin wasn’t aware of “how serious” her actions were until she discovered that the Department of Justice considered punitive action against her. “I actually just got a FOIA back, Freedom of Information Act, recently, expressing how serious they were about trying to charge me with the crime of conspiracy to assassinate the president of the United States,” she said.
Donald Trump also addressed the infamous photo showing the comic holding his severed head, noting how disturbing it was for his family to have to witness such content. Trump, who was president at the time, questioned Griffin’s decency and mental health over the incident.
“Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself. My children, especially my 11 year old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!” Trump posted on Twitter. Similarly, former First Lady Melania Trump also weighed in on the controversial photo. “As a mother, a wife, and a human being, that photo is very disturbing,” she said. “When you consider some of the atrocities happening in the world today, a photo opportunity like this is simply wrong and makes you wonder about the mental health of the person who did it.” Watch Griffin’s appearance on “The View,” where she complained about her six-year hiatus:
“I sincerely apologize. I’m just now seeing the reaction of these images. I’m a comic. I crossed the line. I move the line, then I cross it. I went way too far,” Griffin said, admitting that she took things too far.
