During a recent campaign event in New Hampshire, Vice President Kamala Harris noted that she was “goin’ off script” to push a gun control agenda. Harris’ comments were addressing the school shooting in Apalachee, Georgia, where a shooting claimed the lives of four people and injured nine others. Harris stressed that “it doesn’t have to be this way,” when discussing school shootings.
“I’m going off script right now,” Harris told her crowd. “But listen, I mean, you know, at the last year, I started a college tour, and I traveled our country, meeting with our young leaders, right? And so it was college age young leaders. So I did trade schools, colleges, universities, community colleges. By the way, I love Gen Z. I just love Gen Z,” she continued.
Harris addressed schools engaging in active shooter drills. “But I’ll tell you one of my things, one of the things that I asked every time I went to the auditorium, and it would be filled with these young leaders students, and I’d ask them, raise your hand if at any point between kindergarten and 12th grade you had to endure an active shooter drill. And the young leaders who are here who are raising their hand, I’m telling you, every time the auditorium was packed and almost every hand went up,” she said.
The vice president maintained that, in an ideal state, society should not have to be so concerned about school shootings. “You know, a lot of us, I’ll speak about myself. You know, we had, well, I grew up in California, earthquake drills. We had fire drills, but our kids are sitting in a classroom where they should be fulfilling their God-given potential, and some part of their big, beautiful brain is concerned about a shooter busting through the door of the classroom. It does not have to be this way,” she said.
The Democratic presidential candidate subsequently called for an end to gun violence in America. However, Kamala Harris has continually touted hostile rhetoric toward the Second Amendment and private gun ownership, leading to substantial concerns among gun owners. In the aftermath of her response, Harris has drawn significant criticism on social media.
One user wrote, “Give me a break. We had nuclear bomb drills, “duck and cover” when I was in elementary and middle school. And we were no worse off for it. We teach people to be prepared, situational awareness, and not just for shooters… how about the criminals that slash people on the streets, knock over vulnerable seniors, hijack cars? MAYBE, if you’d lock up criminals instead of supporting rioters’ bail funds, worthless DAs who won’t prosecute, smash and grab robberies, gender modification for children, we’d have a safer society all the way around.
Another person commented, “You know what else is uncalled for, puberty blockers, pronouns and fur babies in high school. That’s mental illness and yet Democrats support damaging our children and taking parents rights away. Then they capitalize on a school shooting for votes.”
“She’s absolutely correct. If the Dems start putting criminals back in jail, stop defunding the police, and start accurately reporting crime data, crime goes down. Regardless, the fact the identity of the shooter hasn’t been released tells me it’s yet another troubled teen with huge warning signs that were again ignored,” another person added.
