Speaking during the 2024 presidential debate hosted by ABC News on the night of Tuesday, September 10 between him and Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump started speaking about the inflation problem that has ripped through the budget of many Americans and, as he did so, Kamala started laughing awkwardly.
That came when the former president said, commenting on the inflation matter, “Because many things are 50, 60, 70, and 80% higher than they were just a few years ago. This has been a disaster for people, for the middle class, but for every class. On top of that, we have millions of people pouring into our country from prisons and jails, from mental institutions and insane asylums.”
It was as he said that, describing the horrid effects of inflation on the American middle class, that Kamala, who was making faces during the debate as Trump spoke, started awkwardly laughing to herself. She shook her head as he did so, appearing to indicate that she was laughing at the ridiculousness of what he said, but many online thought the laugh to be in poor taste given the destructiveness to the middle class.
Amongst those online who thought Vice President Harris’ awkward laugh at what Trump said to be in poor taste was the End Wokeness account on X (formerly Twitter), which posted a clip of the debate incident and captioned it by writing, “Kamala laughs as Trump talks about how inflation is crushing the middle class.”
Commenters on the End Wokeness post sounded off in reply, writing things like “She’s lost this debate ALREADY,” “That’s not gonna land well with the middle-class,” “Kamala Harris will double and triple down on Joe Biden’s radical and destructive policies,” and “KAMALA HARRIS CAN’T EVEN TALK STRAIGHT THIS IS A TOTAL DISASTER OF A DEBATE FOR HER!”
Others wrote things like, “Reminder that the inflation rate SURGED right after Biden-Harris were inaugurated,” “Kamala is on script. She doesn’t answer the questions,” “Kamala doesn’t care,” “She refuses to acknowledge that inflation is a huge problem just by her expression,” and “Kamala is a worse candidate even than Biden.”

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative-leaning think tank that is relatively friendly to former President Donald Trump, commenting on the inflation situation under the Trump Administration and the Biden-Harris Administration, in a mid-July of 2024 article on the state of inflation under both administrations, wrote:
Let’s start with inflation. Over Biden’s near-four years in office, inflation is up roughly 20%. Under Trump, inflation was up 8%. So how could anyone argue that Biden will be better on inflation given that his rate is nearly three times HIGHER than Trump’s. This would be like saying a batter who has struck out four times in a row is more likely to hit a home run than a batter who has hit three homers in his last four at bats.
By the way, Biden did NOT inherit inflation from Trump. In his last four months in office the inflation rate was
Oct. 20—1.2%
Nov. 20—1.3%
Dec. 20—1.5%
Jan. 21—1.4%Then, 18 months later, under Biden, it was 9.1%.
