During a recent campaign event in Michigan, Vice President Kamala Harris had an awkward moment when her teleprompter cut out during her speech. As she was no longer being fed lines to read, the Democratic presidential candidate had to improvise in a seeming scramble to come up with words while waiting for the teleprompter to kick back in.
Harris has been criticized for her public speaking abilities. In several instances, she has demonstrated an inability to answer questions directly and concisely, a skill that is unquestionably required of the president. The incident during the Michigan rally would suggest that Harris struggles to speak off-script, unlike former President Donald Trump, known for skillful, off-the-cuff commentary.
“Remember his number, 32! Today we got 32 days until the election,” the vice president said, employing an uncharacteristic accent compared to her usual mannerisms. However, the teleprompter appeared to malfunction after these comments, and Harris paused in an extended silence before repeating her previous comments.
“So 32 days… 32 days. Ok we got some business to do, we got some business to do. 32 days. And we know… we will do it,” she said. “And, and this is going to be a very tight race until the very end. This is going to be a very tight race until the very end. And we are the underdog, and we know we have some hard work ahead,” the vice president added.
Subsequently, users on social media reacted to the incident, commenting on Harris’ communication skills. “Kamala Harris has no clue what to say after her teleprompter appears to stop working, keeps repeating herself. The Vice President kept repeating “32 days,” conservative commentator Collin Rugg wrote on X, sharing a clip of the incident.
Second Amendment activist Colion Noir similarly wrote on X, “Look, I don’t care what your stance on @realDonaldTrump is—set that aside. Just look at Kamala Harris objectively. She’s wholly incompetent to be President. If you can’t handle a speech when the teleprompter goes down, you don’t have what it takes to lead the United States.”
“Kamala Harris is the embodiment of the Biden administration’s incompetence. With a teleprompter malfunctioning, all we get is a robotic echo of “32 days.” This isn’t just a gaffe; it’s panic, and a glimpse into the chaotic leadership that will continue to undermine our nation,” another person commented, opining as to what this could mean for Kamala Harris’ leadership.

Another person wrote, “This is a scripted, edited, and programmed performance art campaign. At no point has she ever been seen acting ‘real’. These are not her words, so when the script failed, she failed. The committee decided on the candidate. The committee orchestrated the switch. The committee approves the speeches and responses. She can’t ad lib because she’s not allowed to go off script.”
“It’s why she won’t do routine media interviews or take questions from press. She cannot speak without her notes well. I get it, not everyone is great at public speaking. But the way she fumbles shows weakness as a leader and that is more important to our enemies as it is to us Americans,” another person said, questioning Harris’ ability to lead.
