Speaking to a high school football team in Pennsylvania on Sunday, August 18, Vice President Kamala Harris bizarrely told the players that what it means to be a leader is knowing they would be “undefeated” even if they lose some of their games. That wild comment came as she tried to describe what it means to be a role model.
The crowd of high school football players to whom Vice President Harris was speaking were from Aliquippa Junior/Senior High School in Pennsylvania. Harris told the high schoolers that America is “counting on” them as they grow up. She added that she applauds them for their “excellence” and their “ambition.”
Commenting on being a “role model” and telling them that they were part of a “role model club,” Kamala rambled and said, “It’s not easy being a role model. Welcome to the role model club. Being a role model means that members of your family, people you know in the neighborhood, others, your classmates, they want you to see what you do.”
Continuing, Kamala told the team, “What goes into that kind of excellence? What goes into being a winning team? And, you all have taken it upon yourselves to take on that responsibility of being role models and to inspire people you may not even know are watching you to see how you can achieve success.”
That’s when Kamala got to the bizarre line about being undefeated and winning even when they lose games. She told them, “And, by doing that, and all that that requires, which is the hard work, the practice, working as a team, knowing that you will be undefeated even if you don’t win every game, but no circumstance or event or moment will defeat your spirit and your fight, and your preparedness to win and excel, that nothing will dampen your spirit of excellence.”
She added that she is counting on the players and that being undefeated even when losing is what makes America strong, saying, “That’s what I’m counting on from each of you. And, that’s what makes our nation strong.”

As might be predicted, that led to people online roasting her. One, for example, wrote, “The most “cringe”, is the part where Tim Walz, Mrs. Walz, & Doug Emhoff stand there, nodding like they are so ‘inspired’ by her ridiculous speech. 😵💫” Another joked, “She must think she sounds so inspiring. She probably walks off stage and fist bumps herself.”
Other commenters said things like “Why didn’t Tim, the assistant football coach, explain how winning and losing works” and “She’s so fake…and condescending” and “The way she is talking to young men. What a freaking joke 🤡” Another invented a fake quote and joked, “You will be undefeated with equity. We, the government will provide the win you need to get to the same level.”
