In quite a fun video that came when she interviewed two-time Masters victor Scottie Scheffler on Tuesday, December 17, during the LIV-PGA showdown, President Donald Trump’s granddaughter Kai Trump poked fun at Scheffler over his arrest in May of 2024 that came when he was trying to get to the PGA.
The interview when Kai spoke to Mr. Scheffler before he and fellow PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy played against LIV Golf stars Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka. LIV Golf is, as a reminder, a competitor to the PGA Tour that is largely funded by Saudi Arabia, and has led to a great deal of rivalry inside the professional golf world.
As background, Mr. Scheffler’s arrest came as he tried to make it into the Valhalla Golf Club, which was the site of the 2024 PGA Championship, for the second round of the competition on May 17. He tried to make it around a wreck and was, in the end, arrested and charged with several criminal offenses, including second-degree assault of a police officer. The situation was eventually resolved, and led to a bit of public annoyance with the allegedly overzealous police.
In any case, Kai was interviewing Scheffler and joked that he was nice but wanted to know how he found jail. She said, “Scottie, you’re too nice, but how was jail?” Mr. Scheffler, to his credit, responded with humor as the question was asked with humor, joking that everything was fine with it except the boredom.
Laughing, he told her that he had to just sit there and look at the walls while he waited to get out of jail, which was “a little boring.” He said, “You know, honestly, it was a bit boring. There’s not really much to do in there. I was in a cell by myself and just kind of sitting in there looking at the walls. So, it was a little boring.”
Kai, who is known for her golf game and frequently plays with her grandpa, another frequent golfer who encourages her in that pursuit, wasn’t ready to drop the subject. Making another comment about Scheffler’s time in jail, she made another lighthearted comment, this one referencing both the color of prison clothing and the run-in Tiger Woods had with the law in 2017.
She said, joking about that color and Woods having been arrested too, “I mean, orange is not a bad color though – on you, honestly. You pulled it off just like Tiger Woods.” Scheffler once again did well and replied with a joke, telling Trump’s granddaughter, “I prefer the burnt orange a little bit more than the jail cell orange.” Watch the interview here:
The American Tribune, reporting on Scheffler’s arrest when it occurred, said: “As background, Scheffler, the top golfer on the tour, was arrested by the Louisville Metro Police when, in the early morning on Friday, he needed to get to the course before his tour tee time and attempted to drive around a crash scene. A shuttle bus had struck and killed a pedestrian near the Valhalla Golf Club, causing the crash scene and holding up traffic. Scheffler, when he attempted to go around, was ordered by an officer to stop his vehicle, then grabbed the side of the car as Scheffler drove forward. Scheffler stopped after driving 10 to 20 yards, with the officer dragging along. Now Scheffler faces a decade in prison over the incident.“
