During a recent broadcast of Joy Reid’s show on MSNBC, “The ReidOut,” she explained her opinion as to why polling data indicates that Democrats and Hispanics favor mass deportations. According to Reid, it is partly because the polling “casts these people” as in the country unlawfully.
Reid was joined by Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), a Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement. The two had a wide-ranging conversation on the immigration issue plaguing the United States.
Reid pointed out the polling data, stating, “[T]here is this thing that’s happening in the conversation on immigration on the ground level, which is that polling — and we don’t know how reliable it is, and how it’s worded, and I guess it depends — that you seem to see more even Democrats or at least a third of Democrats and even Latinos, in some cases, in favor of mass deportation. It’s — I guess it’s a question of people’s fear of, I guess, employment competition or fear of a disorderly process that they didn’t have to go through, and they feel like I went through the orderly process. What do you think is behind that?”
Jayapal responded, claiming that polling data is highly variable and may not be a reliable indication of the truth. “First of all, I think the polls are all over the place,” she said to which Reid agreed with her. The Democratic representative added, “There was just a poll recently — a lot of it depends on how you word it. If you say, do you want disorder at the border or do you want people to just come in across the border? –”
Reid interjected in the conversation, “To your point, not to cut you, but let me read this to you. So, this is the poll in favor of mass deportations. This was the question, it was, ‘Would you favor or oppose the U.S. government starting a new national program to deport all undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S. illegally?’ And so, it’s like it casts these people, but these are folks that working in the meatpacking plants.”
Later in the segment the two suggested that “fear mongering” is to blame for widespread apprehension toward the rampant illegal immigration that has occurred under the Biden administration. Reid insinuated that Fox News calling out the consistent case of illegal immigrants committing horrific crimes on U.S. citizens was not worth covering.
She said, “Let me show you the — this is one of the reasons that people [support mass deportations]. Here’s the three cable networks reporting on this: Our banner said, ‘Soon Biden announces legal protections for undocumented spouses of citizens.’ CNN’s banner said, ‘Biden announces new protections for some undocumented spouses.’ Here’s FOX’s banner: ‘Migrant arrested for raping 13-year-old New York City girl.'” Watch the interview below:
Jayapal responded to the Fox News banner by laughing. Reid continued, emphasizing how said news coverage is problematic to the Democratic agenda on immigration. “So I think that’s part of the problem, right, is that you have a lot of fear-mongering,” she added.
