Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) ripped into his party the day following President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, accusing them of causing a scene and of not respecting the office of the commander-in-chief. Trump’s speech shattered the record for longest State of the Union ever given, clocking in at an hour and 48 minutes.
During the address, President Trump celebrated the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, which officially goes down on July 4, 2026. He also presented two members of the U.S. military with the Medal of Honor, while taking shots at welfare fraud perpetrated by folks in the Somali community in Minnesota.
Fetterman was especially appalled with the behavior of Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, who made a spectacle of themselves by shouting at the president during his comments on the issue of illegal immigration. The Pennsylvania Democrat slammed his colleagues for constantly holding up signs and yelling at the commander-in-chief, but made sure to say the behavior is bad when done by either side.
“I mean, now it’s, you know, the constant kinds of yelling and screaming and, and, and now holding up signs and for doing all these things, I, I don’t think, I don’t care if it’s a Republican or Democrat, it’s a president, just don’t do that, don’t do that,” Fetterman said during an interview with “America’s Newsroom” co-host Bill Hemmer, AOL reported.
“Respect the office, regardless who’s in that, and now for me, it’s like now when half the people in my party haven’t showed up, and then some of them have chosen to just yell and say and scream during all of it, I, I just don’t think that’s what we want, and I don’t believe as a Democrat… dancing frogs really moves the ball for us as a party either,” Fetterman added.
Adding to the bad behavior, Omar took to social media platform X, where she accused Trump of killing anti-ICE agitators Alex Pretti and Renee Good, both of whom were shot and killed by Homeland Security officers. Good was killed after attempting to run over an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer. Pretti was shot and killed after assaulting an officer.

Liberals with the MoveOn.org organization held a counter-rally during the State of the Union, though things didn’t go as planned. Former MSNBC host Joy Reid was heckled during her speech, while Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) was interrupted by another heckler who managed to get on stage and call him a “scumbag” in front of the entire crowd.
According to a report from The Hill, Fetterman issued a warning to his fellow Democrats about not participating in the kind of behavior displayed by Omar and Tlaib, just days before the event. “I mean, there’s just no dignity if you have paddles, if you are yelling and saying those kinds of things,” Fetterman stated. “I mean, you can agree or disagree on things, but if you’re going to show up, just do it with dignity because, you know, really need to respect the office.”
